The FA has overturned the red card given to Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes in their Premier League defeat against Tottenham.

The Portuguese midfielder was sent off following a first half challenge on James Maddison.

Fernandes was dismissed with Spurs leading 1-0 and Ange Postecoglou’s side went on to win 3-0 at Old Trafford.

Speaking after the match, Fernandes said it was "never a red card".

The sending off would have seen United’s captain suspended for three matches but, following a successful appeal, he will now be available for selection by Erik ten Hag.

A statement from the club said: “Bruno Fernandes will be available for Manchester United’s next three games following a successful claim of wrongful dismissal.

“The midfielder was sent off for serious foul play during the Premier League match against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, 29 September.

“Fernandes was set to miss our league fixtures against Aston Villa, Brentford and West Ham but will now be available for selection following the successful appeal.”

Fernandes has started every league match for United this season but is yet to score for his team, who have struggled for early season form.

Ten Hag’s side sit 13th in the Premier League table with three defeats from their opening six matches, and only two wins.

They progressed in the EFL Cup with a 7-0 win against League One side Barnsley, but made a unimpressive start to the Europa League as they drew 1-1 at home to Twente in their opening fixture.
