Route to UEFA Europa League final: Manchester United on course for Jose Mourinho reunion, Tottenham could face Ajax

Description

Could we see an epic reunion between Manchester United and Jose Mourinho, in the competition he won with The Red Devils eight years ago?

The UEFA Europa League last 16 draw laid out the roadmap for all the remaining sides' route to the final in Bilbao, and in typical European style, it threw up some intriguing clashes across the board.

Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur and Rangers were among the teams in the pots, alongside Mourinho's Fenerbahce, who emphatically ousted Anderlecht in the play-offs after squeezing into 24th place in the preceding league phase.

Man Utd face Sociedad, Rangers meet Mourinho's Fenerbahce, Spurs take on AZ in last 16

United look to claim their first trophy since the arrival of Ruben Amorim as manager, and the competition offers some retribution for a wretched 2024/25 campaign, which currently sees them planted 15th in the Premier League table.

How does the 'Road to Bilbao' pan out for the biggest sides remaining in the Europa League?

Man Utd on course for Mourinho reunion

Amorim's side have been drawn against Real Sociedad in the Europa League last 16, after the Spanish outfit ousted Midtjylland with a convincing 7-3 aggregate victory in the play-offs.

Man Utd Europa League poll

La Real have almost reflected their knockout counterparts with a poor domestic campaign, and United will look to take advantage, as victory would set up a quarter-final with either FCSB or Lyon.

Amorim's side successfully navigated their way past the Romanians with a 2-0 victory in January, though Lyon could prove a staunch challenge having finished just three points below them in the league phase top eight.

The semi-final could throw up a particularly tasty encounter, though - should United make it that far.

On the other half of United's orange-sided draw, Mourinho's Fenerbahce face Rangers, while Roma take on Athletic Club.

That means Mourinho could face an Old Trafford return in the semi-final, over six years since his departure from the club with which he secured European silverware.

But the tests ahead of his Turkish side cannot be underestimated, with a potential return to another one of his former clubs - Roma - also in store before the last four.

Spurs could face rematch of UCL epic

Tottenham will be in familiar territory as they face AZ Alkmaar in the last 16, after already defeating their Dutch counterparts 1-0 in their league phase campaign.

A solitary Richarlison goal was enough to seal the three points which ultimately helped Postecoglou's side seal an automatic knockout spot, and they will face the Eredivisie side again, across two legs, in their bid to advance along their own 'Road to Bilbao'.

And a particularly intriguing quarter-final awaits, should Spurs make it past the last 16.

Postecoglou's side would face either 2022 champions Eintracht Frankfurt or Ajax for a spot in the semi-final - and a tie against the latter would rehash certain memories of their unforgettable UEFA Champions League semi-final meeting in 2019.

The Dutch side raced into a 3-0 aggregate lead with Spurs - then under Mauricio Pochettino - seemingly heading out of the competition.

But a stunning fightback, led by Lucas Moura's hat-trick, saw the Premier League side roar back and win it, via away goals, in the sixth minute of stoppage-time to set up a final with Liverpool.

Tottenham's path to final

Last 16: AZ Alkmaar

Quarter-finals: Ajax or Eintracht Frankfurt

Semi-finals: Lazio, Viktoria Plzen, Olympiacos or Bodo/Gilmt

Rangers land tough draw

As the old adage goes, you have to beat the best to be the best. But the Scottish giants would have hoped for a more favourable run in their knockout campaign after landing a tough road to the final.

They will first take on Mourinho's Fenerbahce, in two legs which promise to host raucous atmospheres in front of the two clubs' renowned, vociferous fanbases.

But should Philippe Clement's side get past the Turkish club, they face a tricky quarter-final against either Athletic Club or Roma.

The Serie A side have enjoyed an upturn in results following the return of Claudio Ranieri as manager, and they edged past Porto for a place in the last 16.

Rangers could end up facing a rematch with United if both teams make it to the semi-final of the competition.

Amorim's side triumphed 2-1, thanks to a Bruno Fernandes stoppage-time winner, when the sides met in January.

Rangers will take on Jose Mourinho's Fenerbahce in the UEFA Europa League last 16, while Manchester United face Real Sociedad.

United last won this competition under Mourinho in 2017, having last made the final in 2021, losing to Villarreal under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

And despite their struggles domestically, Ruben Amorim's side will be hopeful of a strong run in the competition, having enjoyed an unbeaten league phase which saw them finish comfortably in the top eight.

United and La Real met in the Europa League in 2022, with the La Liga side claiming a 1-0 victory over The Red Devils, thanks to a Brais Mendez penalty.

Meanwhile, Tottenham Hotspur, who are looking to end a trophy drought stretching back to 2008, will meet AZ Alkmaar.

The two sides have already met this season in the league phase, as a Richarlison goal sealed a , and a crucial three points as they went on to seal an automatic knockout spot.

Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou had his side plagued with injury issues during their league phase run, but will be welcoming key members of his squad back to fitness for their knockout stage campaign, as the Australian hunts his first piece of silverware in the hot-seat.

Both United and Spurs will see glory in this competition as their only hope of qualifying for next season's UEFA Champions League, given their lowly current Premier League positions of 15th and 12th, respectively.

The meeting between Rangers and Fenerbahce looks set to prove an intriguing encounter, and should Mourinho get past the challenge posed by the Scottish giants, he could face former club AS Roma in the quarter-final - where he recently spent two-and-a-half years in charge.

United, meanwhile, will face either FCSB or Lyon in the quarter-finals if they beat Real Sociedad across two legs. They could clash with former boss Mourinho in the semi-finals, should both The Red Devils and Fenerbahce make it that far.

Spurs, meanwhile, will face either Ajax or Frankfurt in the quarter-finals, where memories of Spurs' stunning UEFA Champions League semi-final comeback victory over the Dutch giants in 2019 could come to the fore.

Lazio, who finished atop the league phase standings, meet Viktoria Plzen in the last 16, with a quarter-final tie against either Bodo/Glimt or Olympiacos in wait.

The seeded teams - those who finished in the top eight places of the league phase - will have home advantage in the second leg. Ties take place on Thursday, March 6 and 13.

Ruben Amorim says Manchester United must 'start over' after struggling in defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in Premier League

Description

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim said his team have to "start over" after they lost 1-0 to Tottenham on Sunday afternoon.

United struggled once again, in part due to a 12-man injury list that saw their subs bench stacked with young players in the absence of senior members of the squad.

Amorim did not call any of them up despite trailing after James Maddison’s 13th-minute winner.

'We got worse and worse' - Slot relieved as Liverpool edge out Wolves

Speaking to the BBC after the win, the Portuguese hoped to get his missing players back to rebuild over the course of the remainder of the season. Lisandro Martinez and Amad Diallo are likely out for the rest of the season, while Luke Shaw has a long-term fitness problem.

He said: "It was the difference of the game, they scored and we didn't. We had the opportunities. We had situations in transitions, trying to get a result, but in the end they scored and we didn't.

"We want to recover the players. I think we can recover some players for the next game. We have to be together to finish the season and start over."

Amorim said that he did not use any of the youngsters on the bench because he did not want to risk their development, and thought his starting 11 did not need to be disrupted.

He explained: "It is the hardest competition in the world. I am trying to be careful with them. I felt the team was pushing for the goal and I felt I didn't want to change. But they will play.

"You try to read the game, understand what you see in training. The team were pushing for the goal and I didn't feel the need to change.

"I am not worried. I understand our fans, what the media think about it. I hate to lose, that feeling is the worst.

"The rest I am not thinking about. I am here to help my players. I understand my situation, my job, I am confident in my work and I just want to win games.

"The place in the table is my worry. I am not worried about me."

Postecoglou eyes ‘massive opportunity’

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou was eyeing a serious improvement from his team as the last third of the season approaches, with their own injury problems to deal with.

He said to Sky Sports: "Our training was better, and I was confident that we would put in a good shift. The focus is still on trying to win games. In the background, we are doing it our own way. We are looking into ways we can do things better, but we are not going to be the only ones.

"There will be a few that come to my world in the next period and people will see it's not just a reflection of people involved, but the circumstances you have been dealt with.

"We have had a few players who have not got injured at all.

"We feel, and I certainly feel, there's a massive opportunity in the back half of the year."

Tottenham Hotspur v Manchester United LIVE: Premier League latest as James Maddison fires hosts ahead

Submitted by daniel on
Picture

Description

An issue Amorim has is that his bench is almost exclusively made up of players with no Premier League experience. He will surely be hoping his established first-teamers can find a leveller before he has to turn to his replacements.

Or will he hook players at the break? He has already shown he isn’t afraid to be ruthless when he deems it necessary.

Spurs have looked the better side so far and deserve to be ahead, but it could have been very different. United had the chances to be level or even ahead themselves.

Garnacho then had a gilt-edged chance unopposed from eight yards out in the 23rd minute and blazed it over the bar. The winger looked rushed and snatched at it.

No wonder Amorim has been tearing his hair out on the touchline, he has seen this story play out before.

The referee brings the first half to an end. Spurs take a deserved 1-0 lead in at the break thanks to Maddison’s opportunistic strike but it is still all to play for.

The latest gives Spurs a free-kick from the left. Son whips it in but it is well dealt with by the United defence.

There will be one minute of added time.

Casemiro lifts the ball into the box and it causes trouble for the Spurs defence. Hojlund might have a half chance if he can get his head on it but he mistimes his jump and misses the ball completely.

Spurs look to break but a Casemiro foul halts that in its tracks and he earns a yellow.

Gary Neville has been scathing in his assessment of United so far, comparing the structure – or lack of – to an Under-10s team.

It has appeared easy for Spurs to play through midfield and launch an attack, but United have had their fair share of chances themselves.

Fernandes floats a free-kick into the box but the linesman’s flag is up for offside against De Ligt. Amorim continues to cut a frustrated figure.

Kulusevski finds Bentancur on the right flank but his cross is knocked out for a corner by De Ligt.

Bergvall has a shot from the corner but he is penalised by the referee for a push.

Spurs definitely seem the more likely to get the next goal.

Casemiro steals possession in the middle of the park and United break. Zirkzee finds Fernandes but his cross is wayward.

Spurs now look to spring a counter through Bentancur but it comes to nothing.

As well as the goal, Maddison has looked a constant threat for the hosts. Postecoglou must be delighted to have the playmaker back available.

Spurs come again. The ball is played into Son on the left and the South Korean cuts it back for Tel, who is making his Premier League debut.

The Frenchman strikes his shot well but Onana is gets down to make the save and concede a corner.

Amorim was not happy on the touchline after the Garnacho miss and it’s little wonder why. For all his side have struggled, they have failed to make the most of the chances they have created.

Zirkzee holds the ball up well and works some space away from Bergvall but fires his shot just wide.

Moments later, Garnacho has just Vicario to beat from close range but skies his effort well over the bar. What a chance and what a miss.

Some nice play on the edge of the United area opens up space for Kulusevski to have a shot but it is well blocked by Maguire.

The trend of conceding first continues for Man Utd. The question now is: how will they respond?

Dorgu makes a nice run up the left before feeding Garnacho. The Argentine teases to shoot before laying it off to Fernandes, but that delay allows the Spurs defence to get organised.

It’s end-to-end stuff. Son’s initial shot is blocked by Mazraoui but it falls to Bergvall, who forces Onana into a save.

The United shot-stopper can only parry it out and Maddison reacts quickest to nudge the ball home and give the hosts a 1-0 lead.

Son nearly latches onto a long ball over the top, but it’s overhit and Onana is able to gather comfortably.

Up the other end, Hojlund cuts in and lashes a shot that is well saved by Vicario. The ball then falls to Garnacho, who curls one towards the far corner.

Vicario saves again and that rebound is gathered by Dalot, but his shot from a tight angle is cleared to safety.

Spence then charges down the left flank and does the same. The hosts have definitely settled quicker and are causing some problems on that wing.

After the big build-up, it’s been a sluggish start. Neither side has really ventured forward.

Spurs have already beaten United twice this season: once in the reverse fixture at Old Trafford and 4-3 in the quarter-final of the Carabao Cup in December. They will be gunning to complete the rare three-peat.

LIVERPOOL TO FACE NEWCASTLE IN CARABAO CUP FINAL AFTER THUMPING SORRY SPURS

Cody Gakpo, Mohamed Salah, Dominik Szoboszlai and Virgil van Dijk scored the goals as Liverpool walloped an insipid Spurs 4-0 at Anfield, easily overturning the one-goal first-leg deficit.

Liverpool immediately seized control of the game, Spurs allowing them the run of midfield. Though they did not create many chances early on, it was inevitable that the pressure would eventually tell and on 34 minutes, Gakpo finished smartly after good work from Salah, Jones and Darwin Nunez.

The notion of a Spurs' improvement was dispelled as soon as the second half started, Liverpool again assuming control with no opposition.

They went ahead in the tie on 51 minutes when Salah creamed home a penalty after Antonin Kinsky bought down Nunez, and made it safe 15 minutes from time when Szoboszlai rounded off a fine move.

Arne Slot's side even added a gratuitous fourth on 80 minutes when Van Dijk headed home from a corner.

So Liverpool go through to meet Newcastle at Wembley - a match in which they will face precisely the kind of physical examination Spurs shied away from in Merseyside. Where they go from here is less obvious.

'LIVERPOOL FULLY DESERVED THE VICTORY'

Ange Postecoglou spoke to Sky Sports after the full-time whistle, and said Liverpool were full value for the heavy victory.

"Ultimately Liverpool fully deserved the victory tonight. They were the better team. We just weren't able to get a grip in any part of the game defensively or with the ball. They were too good for us.

"We allowed them to get into the game, we weren't aggressive as we needed to be. Again, we didn't start the game off on the right foot, it allowed them to get comfortable. Once they got comfortable, it was difficult for us to get some control back."

Tottenham Hotspur beat Wolves to complete signing of RC Lens defender Kevin Danso amid defensive injury crisis

Tottenham Hotspur have completed the signing of Lens defender Kevin Danso.

The Austria international is the second signing for Ange Postecoglou in the winter transfer window, following Czech goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky through the door. Kinsky signed from Slavia Prague on January 5.

Danso arrives on an initial loan, with the obligation to make the deal permanent this summer for a fee reported to be in the region of £21 million.

Manchester United sign Lecce full-back Dorgu as Amorim gets defensive reinforcements

"We are delighted to announce the signing of Kevin Danso on loan from Ligue 1 side RC Lens, subject to international clearance and work permit," read a statement on the club's website.

"The Austria international defender will join the club on loan until the end of the season, with an obligation to make the deal permanent in the summer.

"He will wear the number four shirt."

Postecoglou has endured a tough second season at Tottenham after a persistent injury crisis has left them struggling for defenders, with Radu Dragusin suffering a knee problem in the past week to exacerbate the situation.

Reports have suggested that the Romanian could be out for the rest of the season, which may have forced Tottenham to act in the market. They have also been linked with Chelsea defender Axel Disasi.

Danso, 26, returns to the Premier League following a previous loan spell with Southampton, making 10 appearances across all competitions during the 2019/20 campaign.

He also spent time at the academies of Reading and MK Dons, before moving to Bundesliga side Augsburg.

Danso would then head on a second loan move to Fortuna Dusseldorf in the German second division before joining Lens in August 2021.

His stand-out campaign came in the 2022/23 season, after being named in the Ligue 1 team of the year and helping the club achieve a stunning second-place finish and subsequent UEFA Champions League qualification.

He leaves the Ligue 1 side after featuring a total of 128 times in Les Sang et Or colors, and made 14 appearances for Will Still's side in this campaign before heading to Spurs.

Tottenham 3-0 IF Elfsborg - Three academy graduates seal the match in stunning finish

FUTURE IS BRIGHT AS SPURS SEAL LAST-16 SPOT

Tottenham Hotspur were bailed out by three academy graduates as they sealed a spot in the last 16 of the UEFA Europa League with a 3-0 victory over Elfsborg.

It was largely a low-key affair at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with an atmosphere to match, and Spurs struggled to create a meaningful chance until Pape Matar Sarr saw his shot well saved on 33 minutes after good work out wide by Son Heung-min.

The match of the final league phase stagnated in the second half, until the introduction of Dane Scarlett - who made an instant impact to breathe life into the match.

The 20-year-old, who spent the first half of the 2024/25 campaign on loan at Oxford United in the Championship, immediately pounced on an excellent Dejan Kulusevski cross to head home his first goal for the club, just four minutes after being introduced as a substitute.

And six minutes from time, 19-year-old debutant Damola Ajayi put the result beyond doubt as he fired home after a neat one-two with fellow academy team-mate Scarlett.

To seal what ended up being a heartwarming evening in north London, Mikey Moore capped off the scoring with the last meaningful kick of the game, embarking on a fantastic solo run before squeezing an effort into the far corner.

The result saw Elfsborg exit the European competition, as Spurs enjoyed a well-earned break ahead of their knockout tie.

The streaming home for TNT Sports in the UK is discovery+, where fans can enjoy a subscription that includes TNT Sports, Eurosport and entertainment in one destination.

You can also watch TNT Sports through BT, EE, Sky, and Virgin Media.

CROUCH ON ACADEMY PRODUCTS' IMPACT

Peter Crouch added: "In a game where you thought there might not be any smiles, it was downbeat, the young lads come off the bench, "You can see by everyone's reactions what it means. The injured players on the bench, it means so much when young lads coming through the youth team have such an influence on such a big game.

"Dane Scarlett has bounced around a few different loans, he's managed to get himself in the situation, come on, made a huge impact. Mikey Moore has been around the place, people talked about him for a long time, and Ajayi too - what a goal that was!

"Someone just said to me, just play the kids. We don't need to buy anyone. You know why? Because they're playing with no fear, come off the bench, had a massive impact in a European game.

"The fact the three young lads have come in and made the difference, it's just lifted the whole place. The manager is under so much stress, but everyone is coming away so pleased."

DAVIES HAILS TEAM-MATE SCARLETT'S IMPACT

Spurs defender Ben Davies was full of praise for Scarlett, after the 20-year-old scored his first Tottenham goal just four minutes after entering as a substitute.

"He came on in a game that was quite tough and changed it for us," Davies told TNT Sports. "Dane's worked so hard over the last few years that I've been with him.

"He's had to go out on loan, he's had to play limited minutes but to come on and play the way he did is amazing. Nothing short of what he deserves."

REASONS FOR SPURS FANS TO SMILE

Let us get this straight, Spurs fans have not had much to celebrate this season. But they can walk away from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with broad smiles across their faces.

In what was a low-key affair until the final 20 minutes, Spurs struggled to really create anything meaningful - and it looked for all the world as if they were heading for a stalemate against their Swedish counterparts.

But the introduction of Dane Scarlett - who had previously struggled to break into Spurs' first team - changed everything, on a night where the club's academy ended up showing its worth.

The 20-year-old was first to strike, just four minutes after coming off the bench, while debutant Damola Ajayi soon followed up to notch his first goal and put the game beyond doubt.

But the result became even sweeter when Mikey Moore raced through and dispatched a fantastic solo effort to seal Spurs' top-eight spot. In the end, a fantastic night in north London, and one which will have Ange Postecoglou beaming.

The future is bright!

GOAL! TOTTENHAM 3-0 ELFSBORG (MOORE)

And how fitting is that! The much-loved Spurs youngster seals it, and that's just heartwarming.

From almost the halfway line, Moore wriggles away and races towards the box, before dispatching a low finish into the far corner.

It wasn't a perfect spectacle, but Spurs fans will walk away happy with this one. Three academy graduates, three goals, three points.

WHAT AN IMPACT

Just absolutely great to see two young Spurs academy players making the difference here.

They have absolutely taught their senior team-mates a lesson in how to drive through the opponents' defence, and have made the all-important impact - sealing Spurs' spot in the top eight.

Surely no way back for the visitors now.

GOAL! TOTTENHAM 2-0 ELFSBORG (AJAYI)

WOW! That is some goal from the debutant. Academy graduates absolutely running the show!

The kind of incision that Spurs have been missing all night. Ajayi picks it up on the right flank, before racing infield, playing a lovely one-two with Scarlett, and nestling an inch-perfect effort into the near corner.

Excellent stuff, and that will be that.

GOAL! TOTTENHAM 1-0 ELFSBORG (SCARLETT)

And there it is! Immediately from the bench, Scarlett gets the elusive opener!

That is seriously impressive for a man who has been shipped out on loan numerous times, he has bailed his seniors out, big time!

And to be fair, it is a lovveeellyyy ball in from Kulusevski. He drifts infield and uses that excellent left foot to just float one in.

Scarlett is there, racing onto it and slamming home a header into the corner.

Just four minutes after coming on. What an impact from the young man.

SURELY NOT ANOTHER BLOW FOR SPURS?

In a relatively low-key exchange, the ball is heading out for a throw and Dragusin swings a right leg to try and meet it.

But he gets no contact, and when he plants his foot back on the ground immediately holds his knee. The defender signals to the bench he needs some treatment. Hopefully this isn't too serious.

He does come back on, but immediately shakes his head and goes back down. This is a shame. He will certainly be making way - meanwhile, Postecoglou is beefing the fourth official.
