Ange Postecoglou vows to ‘keep fighting’ after latest Tottenham loss, says players 'not throwing in the towel'

Ange Postecoglou has vowed to "keep fighting" as Tottenham Hotspur manager following a sobering 3-2 defeat to Everton on Sunday.

Strikes from Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Iliman Ndiaye along with Archie Gray’s own goal put The Toffees 3-0 in front at half-time, before Dejan Kulusevski and Richarlison made the final scoreline more respectable.

Nonetheless, Spurs still succumbed to a 12th Premier League defeat of the season and have now lost their first three top-flight fixtures in 2025.

Forest withstand Saints comeback to move level with Arsenal

However, the Australian remained defiant in his post-match interview and told Sky Sports he will "keep fighting".

"I certainly haven't lost any belief or determination to turn it around," he said.

"I think in the second half, the players showed they're not throwing in the towel either, so we'll figure out a way through this.

"They [the fans] will be disappointed with the situation we're in, and they're probably frustrated at our inability to get the results we need to change our fortunes in the league.

"So that's understandable. We're in control of it, it's not the supporters that are in control. It's the players and particularly me that are in control of it."

The Australian was quizzed on Tottenham’s activity in the January transfer window and he is confident that the right players will be brought in to ease the club’s injury crisis.

"I have no issue with the way the club's going about it, they're working hard trying to find solutions for us," he said.

"These players need help for sure and hopefully in the next 10 days we'll find a solution for them.

"It's really tricky, we're not the only ones in the market for players, but the club is working hard to find solutions."

When asked if losing to a side battling relegation diminishes belief, Postecoglou replied: "No it doesn't. When you look at the situation we're in, it'll eventually dissipate.

"We certainly hope and believe it will in terms of player availability, and then we give ourselves an opportunity to at least get some consistency in games and performance."

Exclusive: Ange Postecoglou urges Tottenham to fight for 'turf' at Arsenal in Premier League

Description

We have grown accustomed to Premier League managers playing down the importance of big fixtures during the season, but Ange Postecoglou has gone against the grain by warning his Tottenham side of the importance of the north London derby.

Spurs travel to the Emirates Stadium to take on fierce rivals Arsenal on January 15 – with the action live on TNT Sports and discover+.

Tottenham started the gameweek in 12th position in the table, 16 points behind Mikel Arteta’s side – who are second to leaders Liverpool.

Crouch urges Liverpool to pay Salah 'groundbreaking money' to stay

Speaking to TNT Sports ahead of the match, Postecoglou said: "If there’s territory involved that usually gives it an extra bit of spice. There’s definitely territory involved because there’s a piece of turf that people want to own.

"What I’ve never done is dismiss it as, ‘it’s just another game’, because it’s not, that’s the reality of it.

"We’re all sort of people who are still very much in our own communities and when you’re walking that’s the first thing people say to you so you know the significance of the game.

"There’s no point me going in there and saying, ‘boys just treat this like any other game’, because it’s not.

"There is a little bit more of an emotional presence in terms of you want the players to understand the ramifications of both the good and the bad, but also prepare themselves for the intensity, the tempo, the passion that exists for this fixture."

Postecoglou has faced a lot of pressure this season with his team struggling to find good form consistently against the backdrop of an excessive injury list.

Although he is convinced there is "light at the end of the tunnel" on the injury front, the Australian coach will be without Timo Werner due to a hamstring injury.

The German striker suffered the issue during their unconvincing FA Cup third round 3-0 victory against National League side Tamworth, who took Tottenham to extra time.

However, Spurs will have Richarlison available again.

Speaking about the issues his team has faced this season, Postecoglou said: "We’ll get through it. It’s like every storm, every storm passes but it’s how you get through that storm that counts.

"Whatever we face in the future, we’ve got a reference point. We can say we were at bare bones and we didn’t give in, we kept going."

Asked if his management style is to blame for the amount of injuries Tottenham have racked up, he said: "The way we play is on the edge and I've purposefully done it that way because I’m a really big believer that if we’re going to achieve what I want us to achieve, we’ve got to do things a bit differently.

"There’s no point us trying to be like anybody else because in that race there are clubs that are years ahead of us. We’ve got to try and do things a little bit differently but there’s risk in that."

Virgil van Dijk and Arne Slot frustrated as Liverpool lose to Tottenham thanks to controversial Lucas Bergvall goal

Lucas Bergvall handed Tottenham the advantage in their Carabao Cup semi-final tie against Liverpool, with his first goal for Spurs giving his side a 1-0 win in the first leg, but his effort left The Reds extremely frustrated.

There was disappointment in the Liverpool camp that the Swedish teenager was still on the pitch to slot Dominic Solanke’s pull-back past Alisson at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Just two minutes before the already-booked Bergvall found the net, he chopped down Kostas Tsimikas but avoided a second yellow card.

History made in English football as referee announces VAR decision

Referee Stuart Attwell, who earlier made history when announcing a VAR decision to the crowd, did not pull out a card and it proved costly for Arne Slot’s side.

Tsimikas required treatment, which left his team down to 10 players as Tottenham broke at pace to score the only goal of the tie.

The Liverpool boss was quick to confront fourth official Tim Robinson, while Slot’s assistant, Sipke Hulshoff, was shown a yellow card for his reaction.

Captain Virgil van Dijk was also left baffled by Bergvall being allowed to stay on the pitch.

"Listen, I think it was quite obvious that it was going to be a second yellow," he told Sky Sports. "It was pretty clear.

"A minute later he [Bergvall] scores the winner but listen, it is what it is.

"He [referee Stuart Attwell] made a mistake in my opinion, and I told him that. He thinks maybe he didn’t but it was quite obvious, I think, and everyone on the sideline knew exactly that it was supposed to be a yellow.

"The fact is that he should’ve been off. There’s a linesman there, there’s a fourth official there, there’s VAR, there’s a referee and he doesn’t get a second yellow.

"I’m not saying this is the reason that we lost tonight but it was a big moment in the game."

It had a big influence - Slot

Slot had calmed down by the time he spoke to the media after the match, and gave a measured response when questioned about the game-changing moment.

"It had a big influence on the game," Slot said. "It didn’t feel to me as if we were ever going to lose here.

"You never know, in a moment, things can change and this is what we saw.

"The decision he made had a lot of impact on the result tonight and there’s nothing else I can say about it."

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou was lacking in sympathy for his opponents as he said it was a situation his team had been on the other side of on many occasions.

Asked if Bergvall was lucky to be on the pitch, Postecoglou said: "He wasn’t.

"Those are the rules. We’ve had to cop it for the last six weeks and abided by the rules."

Rodrigo Bentancur stretchered off in Tottenham Hotspur's Carabao Cup semi-final first leg against Liverpool

Updated 08/01/2025 at 21:17 GMT

Tottenham and Liverpool met in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The match was paused early in the first half as Spurs midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur went down without any other players around him after he tried to head a corner towards goal. Players urged medics to rush onto the pitch with the Uruguayan unable to return to his feet.

Rodrigo Bentancur is "conscious and talking" after being stretchered off during the first half of Tottenham’s Carabao Cup semi-final first leg against Liverpool.

The Uruguayan midfielder attempted to attack a corner in the sixth minute but after failing to connect with a diving header, he remained sprawled out, face down, in the penalty box.

There were no players challenging Bentancur when he went to ground.

Players from both teams urgently called for medical staff to treat the Spurs player and, eight minutes later, he was carried from the field with Brennan Johnson replacing him as a substitute.

At half-time, Tottenham wrote on social media: "We can confirm Rodrigo is conscious, talking and will go to hospital for further checks."

Liverpool replied: "We're all thinking of you, Rodrigo. Speedy recovery."

Bentancur had only recently returned to action after serving a seven-match ban.

ANGE SAYS EVEN MO SALAH WOULD SUFFER PLAYING IN HIS INJURY-HIT SPURS SIDE

Ange Postecoglou believes Mohamed Salah - who is enjoying a stellar season so far - would struggle to replicate his remarkable form if he had been featuring in his injury-hit Tottenham team.

LIVERPOOL MAKE FOUR CHANGES FROM MAN UNITED DRAW AS TAA IS DROPPED TO THE BENCH

Right back Conor Bradley comes into the starting line-up with Trent Alexander-Arnold - who is being heavily linked with Real Madrid and endured a horror show against The Red Devils on Sunday - named among the substitutes.

Jarell Quansah is in for Ibrahima Konate at centre back while Kostas Tsimikas replaces Andy Robertson at left back.

The hosts make a trio of alterations to the side that lost to Newcastle last time out.

Goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky gets an instant run-out between the sticks with Rodrigo Bentancur and Heung-Min Son also featuring.

Ange Postecoglou says Mohamed Salah would not shine at injury

Ange Postecoglou believes Mohamed Salah would struggle to replicate his remarkable form if he played for his injury-hit Tottenham side.

The Liverpool forward has scored 18 goals and registered 13 assists during a sensational first 20 games of the Premier League season.

Postecoglou's side face The Reds in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-finals on Wednesday evening, with Spurs on a dismal run of three defeats in four fixtures.

League Cup

'It's tricky, it flies differently' - Arteta says ball change a factor in defeat

The Australian believes Salah is one of the best players in the world, but that he would not have enjoyed his recent purple patch if he was in a Spurs shirt.

"Mo is a world-class player, but if you put him in our team now I'm not sure he'll have that same level of performance because of the situation we're in as a group," said Postecoglou.

"His attacking play, who do you need? You need a team that's kind of in good form, creating opportunities, playing on the front foot, having a really solid foundation of a defence that is cohesive.

"None of these things exist at the moment."

Postecoglou excited by Son's contract extension, says goal is to win silverware before he leaves

Video credit: SNTV

Postecoglou is under pressure with his Spurs side currently languishing in 12th, 22 points behind Liverpool.

In stark contrast, the league leaders are flying high ahead of the Carabao Cup semi-final, having not lost a game in any competition since a 1-0 defeat against Nottingham Forest in September.

Spurs triggered an option to extend Son Heung-min's current deal until the summer of 2026 this week, and Postecoglou believes that his numbers would be significantly more impressive if he had as many opportunities as Salah.

"You've always got to give context. He [Salah] is playing in a fantastic team that are flying at the moment," he added.

"I'd hazard to say that if you put Son Heung-min in Liverpool's team, I reckon his goalscoring return would be decent.

"It's hard for our players at the moment, they're trying awfully hard to be the best they can be.

"But when we're at our best, I still think you'll see Sonny's return, in terms of his ability to score goals and be really effective for us.

"I don't think that's diminished at all."

Explained: Why Anthony Gordon's equaliser for Newcastle United against Tottenham in Premier League was allowed to stand

Newcastle United's equaliser against Tottenham Hotspur was met with disagreement as Spurs claimed a handball in the build-up. Anthony Gordon's goal was confirmed by VAR, despite the ball hitting the hand of Newcastle's Joelinton. Here is why Newcastle's equaliser against Spurs was allowed to stand. The two teams face off in the Premier League, live on TNT Sports and discovery+.

The handball rules once again became a topic of discussion after Newcastle's sixth-minute equaliser against Spurs, which involved a suspected handball from Joelinton in the build-up.

Anthony Gordon netted for Newcastle, but Ange Postecoglou and the Spurs supporters wanted the goal disallowed for handball by Newcastle midfielder Joelinton.

The ball hit the Brazilian's hand after an attempted flick by Lucas Bergvall, and a brief check from the video assistant referee (VAR) confirmed that the goal will stand.

Premier League

'Unstoppable' Isak 'best all-around forward' in Premier League, says McCoist

TNT Sports commentator Darren Fletcher explained the reason for the goal, saying: "The explanation from Chris Kavanagh is that the hand is by his side in a natural position, and therefore they’ve allowed it to go."

The International Football Association Board (IFAB) specifically states that it is an offence if a player:

Deliberately touches the ball with their hand/arm, for example moving the hand/arm towards the ball;

Touches the ball with their hand/arm when it has made their body unnaturally bigger. A player is considered to have made their body unnaturally bigger when the position of their hand/arm is not a consequence of, or justifiable by, the player’s body movement for that specific situation. By having their hand/arm in such a position, the player takes a risk of their hand/arm being hit by the ball and being penalised.

The Premier League Match Centre account on X confirmed the reason for the goal, saying that Joelinton's arm "was by his side, in a natural position and the contact was accidental."

TNT Sports' Ally McCoist added that he was "absolutely thrilled" about the decision after he expected the goal to be disallowed.

"I’m absolutely thrilled about [it], as I thought they would have disallowed it with the handball, but clearly I think it was absolutely spot on. There was nothing he could have done about it, the game should continue, it did continue and Newcastle got a deserved equaliser. Great finish Anthony Gordon.

"In the grand scheme of things, I think the goal should stand, and I’m glad it did."

Newcastle are full of confidence and Isak just turns the ball around the corner into the path of Joelinton. However, the Spurs defence give a sigh of relief as the ball rolls through to goalkeeper Austin.

It’s Newcastle who are now in control and have four minutes to hang on until the break.

Guimaraes has been excellent in this first half as he picks out the run of Gordon whose effort takes a deflection before flying wide.

A driving run forward by Guimaraes who received the ball back in a one-two but is tracked by Porro who keeps level headed inside the box and makes and blocks the ball.

Newcastle should be ahead after a lovely passing move resulted in the ball being fed across the six-yard box and Isak stabbed it wide.

“Which I’m absolutely thrilled about, as I thought they would have disallowed it with the hand ball but clearly I think it was absolutely spot on, there was nothing he could have done about it, the game should continue, it did continue and Newcastle got a deserved equaliser, great finish Anthony Gordon.

This game has yet to pause for breath. The half has had absolutely everything. This time it is Spurs who attack and Porro fires over.

Claims that Dan Burn should have been sent off after already receiving a booking. The Newcastle man had his arms stretched out when a cross hit his arm.

Firstly Bergvall claims that he has received an elbow to his head by Joelinton. Moments later a foul by Dragusin results in a Newcastle free-kick.

Spurs almost have a second goal as the ball drops to Solanke inside the box. However, Botman is equal to the effort to make a crucial block. The subsequent shot is easy for goalkeeper Dubravka to gather.

'Signing somebody is not enough' - Arteta says Arsenal can win league without buying a new forward

Postecoglou believes fixture congestion and his side's style of play have contributed to the number of injuries his players have suffered this season.

"I think it is probably a combination of different things," he said. "The amount of fixtures, the way we play.

"I guess the challenging thing for us is that quite a few of our injuries have been re-injuries which is something we're looking at."

Rodrigo Bentancur will miss the match due to suspension, while Richarlison, Mikey Moore, Ben Davies, Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero will not return until later this month.

Postecoglou also revealed that a bug had disrupted Tottenham's training schedule ahead of Saturday's match.

"None of the injured lads are back yet," he said.

"We've had a bit of an illness bug running through the camp too, so a few have missed training, but we'll be alright."

Newcastle: Botman could feature at Spurs

Sven Botman could return at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury in March.

Newcastle have been in fine form of late, winning their last four Premier League fixtures.

Magpies manager Eddie Howe admits that the defender is in his thoughts ahead of the trip to north London.

"He's worked incredibly hard to get himself in a good condition," he said.

"He's had three games, a lot of internal training as well.

"He's certainly in and around my thoughts.

"I'll have to make a decision on who I think best fits that position. [It is] great to have Sven in and around and available again.

Nuno Espirito Santo believes Callum Hudson-Odoi and Murillo could be back in time to face Wolves on Monday.

Nottingham Forest are currently third in the table after a great start to the season, but Wolves have impressed since former boss Gary O'Neil was replaced by Vitor Pereira.

Nuno will wait until Saturday to make a decision on the pair.

"[Murillo and Callum Hudson-Odoi are] much better. I think so [available for Monday]," he said.

"I think tomorrow we will decide, but I think they’re going to be okay."

Liverpool: Alexander-Arnold to play against Man Utd

Manager Arne Slot insists Trent Alexander-Arnold will play against Manchester United on Sunday despite reports linking him with a move to Spanish giants Real Madrid.

"I can tell you he's [Alexander-Arnold] playing on Sunday and hopefully brings the same performance he's been bringing in the last half a year," said Slot.

"He played an incredible game against West Ham. I see him training hard every day.

"Joe [Gomez] is not in a good place when it comes to his injury, he's out for a few weeks.

"Conor [Bradley] and Ibou [Konate] will train with us today for the first time. They've worked hard to come back for the team.

"The next step is how they'll handle team sessions."

Arsenal: Havertz available for Brighton trip

Kai Havertz looks set to be available for Arsenal's trip to Brighton & Hove Albion after recovering from illness.

Manchester City: Dias not ready yet

Pep Guardiola does not expect Ruben Dias to be back in time for Saturday's match with West Ham.

"[He] is getting better but not ready," said the Spaniard.

Chelsea: Fofana could miss rest of season

Wesley Fofana has suffered another injury blow, with Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca confirming that he could be out for the rest of the season.

Fofana missed all of last season with an ACL injury, and will now not feature in his side's trip to face Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Saturday.

"He could be out for the season, yes," said Maresca. "We don’t know exactly, but could be out for part of the season.

"Difficult to find that kind of player... So yes, Wes is a big loss."

Reece James could return against Palace, and Maresca also said that Romeo Lavia is close to a comeback.

Maresca said: "Reece is back from the last game.

"Romeo is very close, starting to work with us. The rest is not any update.
