Tottenham Hotspur welcome Newcastle United to north London desperately needing a victory to curtail a three-game winless streak.

Ange Postecoglou's side have won just once since their 4-0 decimation of Manchester City on November 23, losing 4-3 to Chelsea and 6-3 to Liverpool in that time, before they were beaten 1-0 by Nottingham Forest and held to an entertaining 2-2 draw by Wolves last time out.

Newcastle, meanwhile, are in a purple patch of form, stringing together four-straight victories to climb to fifth in the table.

Ange Postecoglou defends Tottenham players after late draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers

Description

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou said it "hurts immensely" that his side could not hold out for a win in their 2-2 draw against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Rodrigo Bentancur and Brennan Johnson scored for the Londoners to put them ahead after Hwang Hee-chan’s opening strike, only to see Jorgen Strand Larsen pop up in the 87th minute for an equaliser.

Tottenham are 11th in the league after the draw and have only one win from their last seven league games, and Postecoglou conceded it was painful to see a win slip through their grasp.

Salah admits new Liverpool contract ‘far away’ after another masterclass

"I’m the person in charge, so of course it hurts," he said.

"When I see how hard they are trying, it hurts even more because you want them to get a reward and I think today they deserved a reward for their efforts.

"Even though they were dipping into their reserves of energy, which I don’t even know where they got from, I wanted them to get a reward for their efforts.

"It hurts immensely. At the same time, it’s my responsibility for where we’re at right now, and it’s my responsibility to try to get us out of it.

"It’s fair to say we’re dealing with a fair bit, and it doesn’t feel we’re getting a smooth run at anything in terms of getting players back and allowing us to freshen up the team.

"As soon as we get one back, we lose one. We’ve just got to get through it. There’s still a hell of a lot for us to play for."

After slipping from sixth to the bottom half of the table, Tottenham next play host to Newcastle, and Postecoglou believes that his side are drained after the festive fixture glut, and their injury crisis.

He continued: "We have to try to get some support for the players. Both mentally and physically and in terms of numbers, to give them the opportunity to play at their best.

"They’re very disappointed, but it’s not through the want of trying."

Ange Postecoglou: Tottenham 'working hard' on January transfers as Radu Dragusin and Ben Davies cause concern

Description

Ange Postecoglou says Tottenham are "working hard" to sign players in January after a setback to Ben Davies could leave his side without any fit centre-backs.

Spurs lost their fourth match in their last five Premier League ties, losing 1-0 to Nottingham Forest on Boxing Day, with Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven and Davies all injured.

Speaking at a press conference on Friday, Postecoglou said the club were looking to identify players to sign in the upcoming January transfer window.

Premier League

'Every manager is in danger' - Amorim on risk of Man Utd sack if slump continues

"So we've got to sort of clear a picture of kind of where we're at," he explained. "And I still think we have to be disciplined. It's not just about bringing anybody in. But there's certainly a need for us to try and reinforce if we can.

"Everyone knows January's not an easy time to do that. But, yeah, certainly the club's working hard behind the scenes, to see what we can do to just help the players we've got at the moment who are giving everything in every game, and, you know, sort of dipping into every bit of energy they have to try and get us through.

"I just think we need to help some of these guys because, you know, there's at least two or three who are fairly long-term injuries. So you kind of know you're going to be short there. Others who are coming back from significant injuries - you don't know how long they'll take to get up to speed.

"So, like I said, we need some reinforcements and the club's certainly working hard to try and make that happen. And, you know, we'll see where we get to."

Welsh defender Davies, who plays as a left-back and also as a central defender, has been out since December 5 with a hamstring problem, but has suffered a setback in his recovery.

Postecoglou told the press that while they had hoped to have him back soon, he would likely be absent for another fortnight, saying: "No, he is ruled out. Unfortunately, he had a setback in training, so he'll probably be out for a couple of weeks."

Romanian defender Radu Dragusin was taken off against Forest with an ankle injury, and the Australian coach was unable to shed light on his status.

"A bit early to tell," Postecoglou said.

"He obviously tweaked his ankle last night and felt he couldn't continue. We'll have to wait and see."

Full-back Djed Spence will be suspended for the tie against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday, meaning midfielders Archie Gray and Yves Bissouma could be starting in central defence.

"There's always been issues at different times but not to this extent," Postecoglou observed.

"I think we've had close to pretty consistently 10 first-team players not available for a significant run of games.

"We've been kind of getting through it for quite a while and keeping our fingers crossed we don't get any more issues, but the nature of football and fixture scheduling we've had, we've always been on a fine line of being able to get through.

"It's another test for us, but it is what it is, and whatever we need to deal with, we'll deal with and get ready for Sunday."

Arne Slot: Liverpool boss likens ‘incredible display’ at Tottenham to win over Manchester United

Description

Liverpool boss Arne Slot celebrated "maybe our best performance away from home" after a 6-3 win at Tottenham on Sunday afternoon.

The three points mean that Slot’s side will be top of the table at Christmas, leaving them in a strong position for the Dutchman to win the Premier League at his first attempt.

Liverpool were rarely in trouble against an injury-hit Tottenham side, and were 5-1 up before a late wobble saw their lead reduced to 5-3 only for a late Luis Diaz effort to settle nerves.

Postecoglou: I won’t change my approach despite ‘painful’ defeat to Liverpool

Speaking to the press after the victory, Slot said that he thought it might be their best away performance of the season, only rivalled by their 3-0 win at Manchester United.

"It was very good," Slot said. "Maybe our best performance away from home, although I really like what I saw from Man United as well.

"Until the 60th to 65th minute, I really, really enjoyed what I saw. Of course, we were caught one time in bringing the ball out from the back, and it immediately led to a goal for Tottenham.

‘The comments didn’t help matters’ – Crouch, McCoist on ‘strange’ Rashford interview

"I think if we would have gone into the dressing room with a 2-1 [half-time] lead, that would not have done justice to all the chances we had. That is why I was quite happy with the fact we scored for 3-1.

"Then 4-1, 5-1, incredible display, but then you also saw, no matter how much quality players you have, if they think they don’t have to run anymore in this league and especially against Tottenham, because they are so good with the ball as well, they immediately start to create.

"That’s what they did and they scored two goals. I was happy that the sixth one went in to be fair."

Chelsea’s goalless draw against Everton was a boost to Liverpool’s title challenge, and if they win their game in hand they would go seven points clear at the top.

However, Slot cautioned that there is plenty of work yet to do.

He added: "Of course it means something because you always prefer to be where we are at the moment than to be in another position in the league table, but you know just as well as I know – because I have won the league once – how hard it is to win it.

"You have to keep going, keep on going. Every three days you have to be on the top of your game. Every minute and that’s why it is so hard to win it."

Tottenham v Liverpool live: Premier League updates from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

TNT Sports will show over 500 matches from the UEFA Champions League, the UEFA Europa League and the UEFA Conference League, as well as exclusive Premier League games across the 2024-25 season.

The streaming home for TNT Sports in the UK is discovery+, where fans can enjoy a subscription that includes TNT Sports, Eurosport and entertainment in one destination.

Any matches that fall within the Saturday blackout window in the UK cannot be shown live. The blackout window prohibits matches being shown on television between 14:45 and 17:15 in the UK.

Ange Postecoglou's Tottenham Hotspur side have been "great for the neutral" to watch this season, according to TNT Sports expert Peter Crouch.

But the former Spurs striker also explained why the attacking style used by the manager has led to "frustration" from some fans, particularly as it "feels so obvious" that a different approach is needed at times.

Ange Postecoglou has made a name for himself for his unwavering commitment to attacking football, despite his preferred tactics leaving his team sitting in 11th spot in the Premier League.

Reds manager Arne Slot has praised the Australian for sticking to his guns and hopes the team are rewarded for their approach by winning the UEFA Europa League.

"We will play our football as that is what is winning us games. Arne Slot has come in and it's not easy when you're taking over from the status of Jurgen Klopp. They are settled with the quality they have but on our day we are pretty good opposition."

The stalemate at Goodison Park means Arne Slot's Reds will remain at the summit regardless of what they do at Tottenham today.

Liverpool are currently a point ahead of Chelsea with two games in hand. The Merseysiders can move four points clear with a game in hand if they win against The Lilywhites this evening.

Liverpool bring back the big guns following their victory over Southampton in the same competition, which means it’s just the one change to the side that drew with Fulham last Saturday in the Premier League.

Tottenham fans 'frustration' with Ange Postecoglou's attacking style explained by Peter Crouch

Description

The criticism aimed at Ange Postecoglou by some Tottenham fans stems from "frustration" that "it feels so obvious" he needs to adopt a more pragmatic style, according to TNT Sports expert Peter Crouch.

Postecoglou’s all-in approach has been a big talking point in recent weeks after they scored 13 and conceded eight goals in their last four games in all competitions.

Next up for Spurs is a daunting trip to Premier League leaders Liverpool on Sunday, and ahead of the game his opposing manager Arne Slot said he hopes Postecoglou "wins a trophy" as a reward for his "brand of football."

Premier League

Southampton announce Juric as Martin replacement

Former Tottenham striker Crouch explained why there has been a degree of scepticism about the attacking style used by the manager despite Slot's positivity.

"With regards to Ange, I love the football they play, absolutely love it," Crouch said.

"Sometimes you think when you go two or three up, Villa did it today [against Manchester City] to some degree, there has to be an element of control.

"It feels like it’s so obvious, that you want to get people behind the ball, take the sting out of the game a little bit, and they just don’t do it. They just go for another one and another one.

"That’s the frustration with Tottenham fans. It feels like it’s clear that you need to do something different, but he just continues to play the way he does. It’s great for the neutral."

Spurs 'need to win a trophy'

Spurs have had a disappointing Premier League campaign so far and go into Sunday’s clash with Liverpool in 11th place, 13 points behind the leaders.

However, they remain in the fight in all competitions after sealing a Carabao Cup semi-final against The Reds on Thursday with a 4-3 win over Manchester United, and with a UEFA Europa League last-16 spot still up for grabs.

Tottenham have not won any silverware since the 2007/08 League Cup, and Crouch hopes Postecoglou can be the man to end the barren run.

"They need to win a trophy just because it’s been so long," he said.

"It’s a stick for everyone else to beat Tottenham with. You just want to get that out the way."

'I hope he wins a trophy' - Slot backs Postecoglou for silverware at Spurs

Joleon Lescott was asked if he believes it would be good for Postecoglou’s attacking style to be rewarded with silverware this season.

"It would, because he seems like a charismatic personality and the players have bought into what he’s brought to Spurs," Lescott said.

"But is it more important for them than it is for Aston Villa or Newcastle? I’m sure there are multiple fans who think their club deserve to win a trophy."

final draw: Arsenal face Newcastle United, Liverpool take on Tottenham Hotspur for place at Wembley

Description

Liverpool's defence of the Carabao Cup continues with a semi-final showdown against Tottenham Hotspur, while Arsenal face Newcastle United after the draw for the last four was made on Thursday night.

The semi-finals are played over two legs, with the first games scheduled for the week beginning January 6, and the return fixtures in the week beginning February 3.

That first week will be a busy one for north London, as both Arsenal and Spurs were drawn to play their first legs at home.

'So obvious' - Spurs fans 'frustration' with Postecoglou explained by Crouch

Arsenal have lost to Newcastle already this season - a 1-0 defeat at St James' Park in the Premier League, after suffering the same scoreline in the North East last term.

Liverpool and Spurs collide in the league before their next cup exploits, as they clash this weekend at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Record 10-time winners Liverpool are looking to retain the trophy, with the 2023/24 EFL Cup having been Jurgen Klopp's final piece of silverware as Reds boss.

Arne Slot will now hope it is his first, though he will be confident of potentially bagging silverware elsewhere as Liverpool sit top of both the Premier League and UEFA Champions League standings.

Mikel Arteta, meanwhile, is eyeing a first major trophy since the 2020 FA Cup. The Spaniard has, however, been keen this week to remind people that he has lifted the Community Shield twice as manager.

Tottenham want to end a 17-year trophy drought, having last won this competition in 2007/08 under Juande Ramos, and give Ange Postecoglou a first Wembley appearance.

Eddie Howe is trying to end an even longer wait for a major trophy, with Newcastle's last moment of glory coming 70 seasons ago in the FA Cup.

Arsenal confirmed their spot in the final four with a comeback 3-2 victory over Crystal Palace on Wednesday.

Gabriel Jesus, who had not scored at home in over a year, netted a second-half hat-trick after Jean-Philippe Mateta had given Palace an early lead. Former Gunner Eddie Nketiah struck late on in vain.

Liverpool joined Arsenal by defeating Southampton 2-1, in a battle of the clubs currently top and bottom of the Premier League table.

The gap did not show too much on the evening, as Liverpool were made to sweat after taking a lead through Darwin Nunez, and Harvey Elliott extending it. Cameron Archer's goal made it a nervy affair.

Newcastle United progressed with a comfortable 3-1 victory over Brentford, as Sandro Tonali scored twice in the first half. Fabian Schar added some gloss, before Yoanne Wissa grabbed a consolation.

Brentford's horrendous away form has seen them win just once on the road all season across all competitions - in August, against fourth-tier Colchester United.

Spurs completed the line-up with a 4-3 victory against Manchester United on Thursday. Dominic Solanke's brace sandwiched a Dejan Kulusevski goal, and Joshua Zirkzee pulled one back.

Amad Diallo continued his strong form and threatened a fightback by punishing a Fraser Forster error, but Son Heung-min saved then-struggling Spurs' blushes by scoring directly from a corner. It was much needed, as Jonny Evans headed in another deep into added time.

Micky van de Ven, Cristian Romero ruled out with injury until new year, Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou confirms

Tottenham Hotspur defenders Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero have been ruled out until the new year with injury, Ange Postecoglou has confirmed.

Both players were forced off during the 4-3 loss to Chelsea on December 8, and the Spurs boss does not expect either of them to feature in the busy festive schedule, which continues on Wednesday with a home quarter-final tie against Manchester United in the EFL Cup.

It is another setback for Romero, who was making his first appearance in over a month after recovering from a toe injury, but lasted just 15 minutes on his return before suffering a quad problem.

League Cup

Tonali fires Newcastle into EFL Cup semi-finals, Jesus inspires Arsenal comeback

Van de Ven, who had missed the previous seven matches with a hamstring injury, then pulled up while running in the second half.

Postecoglou – who had defended his decision to start his centre-back pairing, insisting it was not a gamble – is now facing another injury crisis at the back.

"Van de Ven and Romero are still chugging along. I think both will be in the new year," said Postecoglou.

"Not as significant injury as last time with Micky, but obviously having a setback, the medical team is going to make sure he is right to go. So both of them in the new year at some point."

To make matters worse, fellow defender Destiny Udogie is also expected to miss the match against Ruben Amorim's side, though Postecoglou is not ruling him out completely.

"I guess from the other night, Destiny no injury, but he is still a bit sore from the game. We are not ruling him out, but we will see how he is with the turnaround," said the Spurs boss.

Spurs, who are 10th in the Premier League table, host leaders Liverpool on Sunday, December 22, before facing a trip to high-flying Nottingham Forest on Boxing Day.

Postecoglou will be hoping Mikey Moore and Ben Davies can feature from next week, but forward Richarlison will not be available until early 2025.

"Mikey is back in training, so hopefully not too far away. The next cabs off the rank are Mikey and Ben Davies potentially next week, and then Richarlison maybe first week of the new year," said Postecoglou.

5 Tottenham: James Maddison stars as Spurs sink sorry Saints with FIVE first

Description

Tottenham Hotspur ended a five-match winless streak in ruthless style as they demolished Southampton 5-0 at St Mary’s Stadium on Sunday.

Ange Postecoglou’s side scored five goals in the first half of a Premier League match for the first time in the club’s history, as James Maddison, Son Heung-min, Pape Sarr and Dejan Kulusevski all got among the early goals.

It took Maddison just 37 seconds to give Spurs the lead - Tottenham’s quickest Premier League goal since Christian Eriksen’s strike after 11 seconds against Manchester United in January 2018 - as he ran on to the end of Djed Spence’s through ball before slotting past Alex McCarthy.

Europa League

Spurs fight back to salvage Rangers draw at electric Ibrox

Son added a second on 12 minutes following some calamitous Southampton defending, before Kulusevski pounced on a loose ball in the six-yard box two minutes later for the visitors’ third.

With only 25 minutes on the clock, Sarr danced through the lacklustre home backline to stab home a fourth.

Russell Martin had seen enough and headed down the tunnel just before half-time and missed the history-making goal as Spurs rubbed salt into the wounds with a fifth, Maddison grabbing his second with an excellent finish from a tight angle.

All the damage was done in the first half as Southampton managed to keep the visitors at bay in the second period, and even came close to a consolation goal themselves when Mateus Fernandes’ header was ruled out for offside.

Spurs move to within four points of fifth-placed Manchester City with the victory, while Southampton remain rooted to the foot of the table, nine points adrift of safety.

Talking point - Spurs thrash sorry Southampton

It is a big win for Spurs, not just in terms of the score. They have ended a barren run of five games without a win in the wake of that amazing 4-0 victory at Man City last month.

When Spurs are good, they are good. They made it look so easy in the first 45 minutes, helped by some dreadful Southampton defending, and were far too strong for the home side.

As for the Saints, how do they save their season from here? Before the game, TNT Sports guest Aaron Ramsdale - sidelined with a finger injury - insisted that the team had not lost faith in the manager, but it is hard to see how he picks his squad up after that.

Player of the Match - James Maddison (Tottenham)

Maddison looked on course to score his first Premier League hat-trick when he struck twice in the first half, but that wait will have to go on for now.

His second-half substitution ended that particular target, but nonetheless, he will be delighted with his performance. He was so influential and, as TNT Sports expert Joe Cole pointed out, when Maddison plays well, Spurs play well.
