Tottenham captain Heung-min Son is at the centre of discussions over his future as uncertainty lingers regarding the extension of his contract.

Son’s current deal is set to expire next summer, with the club retaining an option to extend it for an additional year.

However, the lack of progress in formalising the extension has sparked concerns about the club’s approach to handling their star player’s situation.

Former Spurs scout Bryan King has voiced his disappointment over the delay, emphasising that a player of Son’s stature, who has consistently delivered since his arrival in 2015, deserves more respect.

The pundit also suggested that the ambiguity surrounding his contract could potentially impact the South Korean’s morale and performance on the pitch.

Speaking to Tottenham News, King said:

“This should have been sorted out three or four months ago.

“It is ridiculous. This is a player of quality who has given his football career to Tottenham. Since he joined the football club, up until the present day, there couldn’t have been a better servant.

“Watching the way he has played recently, I question whether 100 per cent of his heart is still at Tottenham because I’d certainly feel aggrieved if I were him. I’m not sure whether Son is happy at the moment. How many years has he been at the football club? And he’s been a star virtually from day one.”

Since signing for £22 million from Bayer Leverkusen, Son has been a cornerstone of Spurs’ success. Last season, he stepped up as a leader following Harry Kane’s departure, tallying 17 goals and 10 assists in 36 appearances.

In the current season, despite battling injuries, Son has maintained his form, contributing seven goals and six assists in 20 games.

Beyond his impressive statistics, Son’s value to the team extends to his role as a captain and leader. His ability to deliver in critical moments, such as his crucial winning goal against Manchester United in the EFL Cup quarterfinal, underscores his importance to Ange Postecoglou’s side.

His leadership and on-field brilliance have made him a vital figure during a transitional phase for the club.

For Tottenham, securing Son’s future should be an immediate priority. The 32-year-old has consistently proven his worth as both a player and a leader, and resolving his contract situation would send a strong message to the dressing room.

If the player is not offered a new long-term contract, Daniel Levy could face a massive backlash from fans.
