Tottenham look set to end the 2024/25 campaign on a negative note after yet another thrashing, this time at the hands of Premier League title-winners Liverpool, and journalist Kyle Freegard has criticised goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario for his performances in recent weeks.

The Italian was signed to be Ange Postecoglou's number one in the summer of 2023, and Spurs coughed up a fee in the region of £17 million to pry him away from Serie A outfit Empolio.

After a stellar first season, Vicario suffered early in the 2024/25 campaign, which meant he was sidelined for a number of months. However, since returning to action in February, he has looked a shadow of his former self.

Freegard: Vicario 'Absolutely Awful' for Tottenham

The 28-year-old is yet to replicate his quality before injury

Despite nudging into an early lead over Liverpool thanks to a header from Dominic Solanke, it didn't take long at all for Liverpool to completely turn the tables against the North Londoners. Luis Diaz, Alexis Mac Allister and Cody Gakpo all found themselves on the scoresheet heading into the half-time break, and the Reds later added two more to make it 5-1 by the full-time whistle.

It was the second time Vicario had conceded more than four goals in a match in just the last two weeks, with the last occurrence being the 4-2 defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers. The Italy international was also poor during his side's 2-1 defeat to Nottingham Forest last week, making an error which led to the Tricky Trees' second goal.

Speaking to X (formerly Twitter), Freegard lambasted Vicario's performance in recent weeks, saying:

Tottenham are currently languishing in 16th place in the Premier League, and have registered 19 losses from a possible 34 - only the three relegated teams have had a worse record than the Lilywhites this term.

Although Vicario has been absent for a significant portion of the campaign, he has nonetheless been unable to help his side salvage as much as a top-half finish since returning to full fitness. Like many in the Tottenham squad, he still has work to do to prove his long-term worth to the club beyond this season.
