Guehi was the Magpies’ number one target in the summer, seeing multiple offers - the highest being £60million - rejected before walking away from negotiations as Crystal Palace demanded in excess of £70m.

The failure to sign the 24-year-old meant Newcastle failed to secure a major signing.

“[Guehi] wasn’t the only target,” United boss Eddie Howe said on the Up Front with Simon Jordan Podcast. “A lot goes into a summer, you never just have one target - that wouldn’t be right.

“We went into the summer with several targets and we tried to sign two or three other players but we didn’t get them. We ended up towards the end of the window with one target and we didn’t get him so that was it.”

The England international remains a player of interest, but United have resisted making a fresh approach in January. Newcastle have in the last few days raised around £30m by selling Miguel Almiron and Lloyd Kelly but will wait until the summer before strengthening Howe’s squad.

The hope is that some short-term pain will lead to long-term gain and essentially allow United to spend more freely in a summer window amid pressures to comply with Premier League Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

Several clubs eye summer move for Marc Guehi

Howe’s side could revisit a move for Guehi then when the defender enters the final 12 months of his contract. However, competition for his signature will be high.

Spurs have today saw an offer rejected by Palace. The Athletic claims Ange Postecogelu’s side will try again in the summer.

David Ornstein posted on X: “Crystal Palace reject major bid from Tottenham Hotspur to sign Marc Guehi permanently. #THFC + other clubs expected to try again for 24yo England international in summer, when centre-back will have 12mnths left on #CPFC terms.”

When asked if the transfer rumours had affected him, Guehi said last year: “I would say yeah and no, When you are constantly reading things about yourself, it can be distracting for some people.

“I’m just glad I have a good support system around me, my family, the club, my friends. And it is important that humility, making sure you focus on the task at hand.

“Palace have given me every single thing in the world and I am completely grateful to them. I just want to repay them and give my best.”
