Former Tottenham Hotspur and Leeds United goalkeeper Paul Robinson has advised Newcastle United against making a move for a four-time Premier League winning striker in the January transfer window.

Newcastle are believed to be in the market to sign a replacement for injury-prone striker Callum Wilson, who is approaching the final months of his contract at St James’ Park.

The Magpies are reportedly keen to strengthen their attacking options to provide further competition to Isak and according to TeamTalk have identified Jesus as the type of striker that could help take the team forward.

The 64-time Brazil international was a hugely successful understudy to Sergio Aguero at Manchester City that was heavily praised by Pep Guardiola for his tremendous work rate both in and out of possession, his high press and his ability to influence the game in a variety of different positions.

At Manchester City, he scored an impressive 58 goals in 159 league matches, despite mainly playing as a substitute and formed part of a team which won four league titles, one FA Cup, three League Cups and two Community Shields.

Jesus’ consistency over a number of season prompted Arsenal to sign him for £45m in July 2022 and in his first season as the main man he impressed with 11 goals in 26 league appearances to help his side to a second place finish and Champions League qualification for the first time in six seasons.

However, in recent years Jesus has struggled with injury issues and his goal record has dried up. He is currently on an 18-match streak without a goal in the Premier League and it is for this reason that Robinson has warned Newcastle against signing the 27-year-old, who may be past his best.

Robinson told Football Insider: “He doesn’t score enough goals, it's as simple as that. He can play wide and in different positions but he’s a striker, that’s the issue Arsenal have had. Newcastle went into last season light with Isak and Wilson who are both susceptible to injuries.

So they’re light in that area as it is, and if you’re going to sign a striker then you want once who can provide a consistent source of goals. Arsenal are constantly linked with signing a new number nine because they haven’t got an out-and-out goalscorer in the team. Kai Havertz has done really well, but with a striker who scores regularly, they’d get better results.”

Football financial expert Stefan Borson has hinted at Newcastle United replicating Tottenham Hotspur’s stadium approach.

Spurs relocated from White Hart Lane in 2017 while work began on their £1billion stadium. A lot of the venue had been built before the existing ground was demolished later that year.

However, Tottenham had the London luxury of being able to play at Wembley while the rest of the new stadium was built. That is a problem that the Magpies face, with no plausible alternative should they stay on the current site.

Some have suggested Newcastle could play at a temporary ground similar to Stadium 974 at the 2022 Qatar World Cup. The potential location is up for debate, however, with fans expressing concerns about taking St James’ Park outside the city centre. Watch on Shots! Geordie Journos reflect on Newcastle United takeover - three years on

Monetary guru Borson has tipped Newcastle to rebuild on their current location - but did not provide answers for where the Magpies would play temporarily. He told Football Insider: “From what I’ve seen, I think the plan would be to be like a Spurs-style situation. They have got a plot of land that is next to the stadium.

“So you do three sides of the build on one side of the stadium while the stadium is still active and then you flip round. But as we know, Spurs still had one year where they didn’t have anywhere to play. It’s hard to see what the solution would be for Newcastle.

“It’s something that will limit their progress on this I think. It’s very hard to know what the answer would be to that.”

Brad Miller, appointed the club’s Chief Operating Officer in the summer, promised a “once-in-a-generation investment” to solve Newcastle’s stadium dilemma. But many took his comments as a precursor to an eventual move from St James’ Park.

Amanda Staveley left Newcastle United this summer after nearly three years in charge - but it’s fair to say she’s not forgotten the club, nor have the supporters forgotten her.

Along with husband Mehrdad Ghodoussi, Staveley was a popular face and figurehead of the Saudi majority takeover of the football club, which was completed in October 2021.

Staveley was a director at St James’ Park until she departed in a hierarchy rejig this summer, which also saw her company, PCP Capital Partners, sell its near 6% remaining stake in Newcastle.

She was this week replaced by Roger Thornton on the Magpies’ board. Thornton, born in South Shields, has joined the club’s board of directors amid close links to Magpies’ co-owner Jamie Reuben. He has previously played a key role in recent developments in Newcastle city centre as well supporting property matters at Newcastle Racecourse, which is owned by Reuben.

His grandfather helped relaunch the Newcastle United Development Association in the mid-1960 and played a key role in supporting ground improvements at St. James' Park over many years.

However, it’s hard to replace Staveley in the eyes of the fans, who still have HUGE soft spot for the financier. And it appears, despite her exit, she still has a soft spot for the Toon, even though she constantly gets linked with a deal to buy into Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur. Taking to her Instagram, Staveley posted a reel of her dog, Milo, sporting a brand new Barbour jumper, sitting on a Newcastle United blanket.

The caption read: “Milo is loving his @barbour jumper and @nufc blanket keeping him snug this winter 🐶.”

And fans reacted to the cute post with a whole lot of love for Staveley.

andyjsmith1981: “Is this a new hint at a sponsor 🤔. Milo looks cute.”

rachaelsundin: “❤️.”

man_called_vic_: “This hurts 🖤🤍😢.”

kerrylegard: “Miss u so much 😢 hope u and the family are all doing great. Thank u for everything 🖤🤍🖤🤍❤️.”

krissy_potts: “Think just about every Newcastle fan is praying you both come back to the club.. your both missed beyond belief 💙.”

donnahanc: “When you coming back to Newcastle Amanda 🤞🏼your so missed.”

davidbuizi: “Miss you Mandy 🖤🤍❤️.”

The winger gave Newcastle’s defences plenty of problems earlier in the season

Newcastle United, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur are all battling to secure the signature of AFC Bournemouth winger Antoine Semenyo in the January transfer window, according to reports.

Semenyo made a name for himself after progressing through the Bristol City academy and made his debut at 18 years of age as a substitute for current Magpie Lloyd Kelly when the pair played together in 2018. The Ghanaian showed signs of promise in the lower leagues during loan spells at Bath City and Newport County, which prompted then League One side Sunderland to sign him on a six-month loan deal on deadline day in January 2020.

Semenyo struggled to find his best form at the Stadium of Light and was limited to just seven appearances under Phil Parkinson in a difficult period which was marred by the Covid-19 pandemic and the lockdown rules that were enforced at the time. However, after returning to Ashton Gate, he established himself as one of the most exciting dribblers in the Championship over the next 18 months and earned himself a £10m move to Premier League side Bournemouth in January 2023.

Semenyo enjoyed an outstanding first full season for the Cherries last term under Andoni Iraola, recording eight goals and two assists in 33 matches to help his team to a solid 12th place finish. The 24-year-old notably got on the scoresheet during a 2-2 draw against Newcastle back in February last season and was once again at the centre of attention this term when the two teams faced off in August. During the contest, he raced past Tino Livramento to provide an excellent assist for Marcus Tavernier in an entertaining 1-1 draw at the Vitality Stadium.

Semenyo is renowned for his excellent trickery, pace and creativity which makes him a top target for Newcastle in January, according to GiveMeSport. The outlet understands that Eddie Howe’s side have sent scouts to keep tabs on the Bournemouth winger this season as they ponder making an offer in the January window.

Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur are also showing interest in the Ghana international, who has emerged as one of the rising stars in the Premier League this season.

Newcastle had a late bid rejected for Nottingham Forest winger Anthony Elanga on deadline day and are believed to see the right side of attack as a priority position to strengthen in the coming months.

Amanda Staveley may be looking to invest in another football club in the near future - but her heart remains with Newcastle United.

Staveley, alongside husband Mehrdad Ghodoussi, left St James’ Park in the summer after three years when the pair’s shares were acquired by the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia and RB Sports & Media at a 85%/15% split.

Not only did Staveley broker the £305m PIF takeover, the Ripon-financer took control of the day-to-day running of the football club and oversaw a huge transformation as the Magpies - under Eddie Howe - successfully battled relegation before qualifying for the Champions League.

“Amanda and Mehrdad will forever have our tremendous thanks and well-wishes as they move on to focus on their other business interests,” said Newcastle non-executive chairman and PIF governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan when announcing the duo’s departure in July. “We have achieved so much together since 2021, including achieving Champions League football in our first full season as stewards of this incredible club.”

In the months since leaving, Staveley - with backers for the Middle East - has been heavily linked with investing in Tottenham Hotspur with talks thought to have taken place. But Staveley has reminded everyone she is a Geordie at heart after showing off her dog Milo’s Newcastle United-themed blanket.

“Milo is loving his @barbour jumper and @nufc blanket keeping him snug this winter,” Staveley wrote on Instagram. It is worth noting Barbour was founded in South Shields, so Staveley has made sure Milo really is on trend!

“Nothing is going to replicate that. I fell in love with Newcastle, the club and the people and that can’t change, but I didn’t want to get in Newcastle’s way,” Staveley told recently told The Athletic. It’s got to be about what’s best for Newcastle.

“Mehrdad and I are keen to be hands-on. We’re hard-working people, I love to be very busy and to engage and I love football. Very sadly, we have to move on to other projects and that might involve us taking a stake in another club or buying another club and that’s difficult. But it’s possible.

“I don’t know what my future holds, but you can never move on from the love I have for Newcastle and I would love to come back for matches. I’m a Geordie now. I’m a Yorkshire Geordie, but I will always have that chemistry and that love.”

Paul Mitchell reveals Yasir Al-Rumayyan’s ‘ambitious’ Newcastle United demand after Tottenham Hotspur win

Newcastle United’s chairman was in attendance for the 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday

Paul Mitchell has revealed the Public Investment Fund are as “enthused as ever” to make Newcastle United successful.

A drop-off last season combined with underwhelming transfer activity led some to speculate whether PIF - Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund that owns an 85 per cent stake in the Magpies - had grown tired. Further investments in boxing, F1, MMA and snooker place Newcastle in a crowded sporting portfolio.

PIF governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan, also Newcastle’s chairman, was in attendance for the 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur. Sporting director Mitchell revealed the Saudi chief rallied the Toon boardroom on Sunday.

"We spent pre-match together in the chairman's lounge chatting about loads of different things, getting to know each other personally,” he told a room of reporters. “We watched the game together and, after the game, we had a good catch-up, a bit more formally just in terms of the vision and the plan. He's super ambitious.”

"I have a few more grey hairs because of the level of ambition that we actually have. He is as ambitious and enthused as ever. I only know from my interaction - I can't speak for anyone else - but he's super ambitious and he wants us to perform at the number one level.

“He wants us to perform not only through the money we spend - he wants us to be best in class across everything we do, whether that be youth development, the women's team, scouting and recruitment, data and insight, coaching, innovation.

“He wants our position to be at the top, but to be there for the reasons that people admire as a really well-oiled, well-executed machine of a football operation. That for me came across in his message."

Mitchell insisted Al-Rumayyan is aware of FFP/PSR restrictions hampering Newcastle’s ability in the transfer market. He added: "He's (Al-Rumayyan) a smart man. He's a very smart man. I think he can see that the club is growing, but he's smart enough to know it's moved very quickly over a very short period of time. He knows infrastructure is important.

“He knows people's IPs are important. He knows a higher overarching framework and strategy is crucial to get to where we want to get to. Using terminology like that shows there's a plan and patience. You have got to then deliver and execute across that plan and timescale, but he's a very intelligent owner with what I received on Sunday when we spoke."

‘Newcastle have…’ - Ange Postecoglou makes controversial St James’ Park atmosphere claim

Newcastle United were outplayed for large spells against Tottenham Hotspur but ground out a 2-1 win

Ange Postecoglou claimed a “strong” St James’ Park atmosphere helps Newcastle United earn “little” decisions from referees.

Another tense Toon display saw Eddie Howe’s men grind out a 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur - despite being on the back foot for large spells. Both Newcastle goals came against the run of play but that mattered little to home supporters at the full-time whistle.

For the third consecutive season, the Magpies put Tottenham to the sword to maintain their unbeaten start to 2024-25. Speaking post-match, Spurs boss Postecoglou praised the Tyneside atmosphere - but insisted it helped sway referee Rob Jones’ performance.

“(It was) very similar, I guess to our first away game when we controlled it for the most part, nullified most of the threats that Newcastle have,” he said. “It's obviously a difficult opponent here at home. The crowd create a pretty strong atmosphere for the home side. Little things go their way but I thought for the most part we handled that really well.

“We gained the ascendancy in the game and just needed to kill it off - we didn't. I thought we switched off a little bit but the game should have been well over by then. When an opposition defence stays deep, it's pretty hard to get in there. There are 10 bodies in there at times. Apart from Isak, everyone else is there (defending).

“We just lacked a little bit of composure. Sometimes our positioning was off where we should have been with work and we let them off the hook. So, another sore one (result) unfortunately where we haven't got the rewards for our play. But ultimately, it's three strong performances from the first three games. The results don't reflect it in that way.”

Alan Shearer delivers 'huge' 12-word reaction to Newcastle United's win vs Tottenham Hotspur

Alan Shearer has delivered his verdict on Newcastle United’s 2-1 win against Tottenham Hotspur.

Eddie Howe’s side took the lead in the 37th minute when Lloyd Kelly’s cross was directed home by Harvey Barnes, who was making his first Premier League start of the campaign.

Spurs dominated much of the second-half, levelling in the 57th minute when Brennan Johnson’s shot was turned into his own net by Dan Burn. Newcastle’s winner came against the run of play when Jacob Murphy unselfishly set up Alexander Isak after being played in by Joelinton.

And reacting to the win on X, formerly known as Twitter, Shearer said: “A huge win for the Toon despite not being at their best!!! #NEWTOT“

Newcastle had 33% of the possession and half the amount of shots on target.

Isak added: "Generally we weren't expecting to have too much of the ball. We wanted to be dangerous on the counter-attack. It wasn't the most beautiful game from our side but we defended really well and scored two so that's good.

"You always have to be concentrated. It's easy to get frustrated. It was a tough game and tough for me - I wasn't at my sharpest. Jacob Murphy had a great assist, very selfless, so it was just being in the right place.

"We've always, at home, felt like we have that extra energy. We have spoken about using that. In the second half when we had a bit of a dip in our performance, we got some energy. Small changes made a big difference and really helped us get the win.”

Harvey Barnes opened the scoring in the 37th minute before Spurs levelled shortly after half-time through Dan Burn’s own goal. Alexander Isak then scored the winner inside the remaining quarter of an hour against the run of play.

The win marks the first time Newcastle have won their two opening Premier League home games since the 2000/01 campaign.

The visit of Spurs was Newcastle’s first game since the summer transfer window closed and Lloyd Kelly was the only new face to feature in the starting XI with Will Osula on the bench while Odysseas Vlachodimos and John Ruddy were left out of the matchday squad.

In attack, Howe unleashed Alexander Isak, Harvey Barnes and Anthony Gordon for the first time at St James’ Park since his side hammered Ange Postecoglu’s men 4-0 in April.

Both Isak and Barnes went close to breaking the deadlock in the opening stages but their momentum was halted following a long stoppage that saw fourth official Darren Bond become the linesman. Nick Pope twice had to deny Pape Sarr from distance.

United grew back into the game and got their noses in front in the 37th minute when Kelly’s cross was directed home by Barnes. That saw the home side take a 1-0 lead to half-time.

Spurs dominated much of the second-half and equalised in the 57th minute when Brennan Johnson’s shot was turned into his own net by Dan Burn. The visitors looked more likely to win but Newcastle claimed a winner through Isak.

FA regulations rules key player out of Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur - three strikers unavailable

Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur will be without some key players for this afternoon’s Premier League clash (kick-off 1:30pm).

Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou has confirmed he is without strikers Dominic Solanke and Richarlison, however will welcome back Rodrigo Bentancur following his head injury on the opening day against Leicester City.

Solanke started their 1-1 draw at the King Power Stadium but hasn’t played since due to an ankle injury. Richarlison, meanwhile, picked up an issue in training this week.

Postecoglou explained: "Rodrigo is all good, he's passed all the protocols we need to, and more importantly he feels really good and the medical team are really comfortable with him being available for Sunday."

“Unfortunately, Dominic Solanke, who also picked up a knock at Leicester and missed last weekend, isn't ready to return - and Ange reported that Richarlison was injured in training this week, and is expected to 'miss the next few weeks'.

"Dom is close but we're going to be a bit cautious with him, we've got a big programme post the international break, so he'll miss out on Sunday. The only other one we got midweek is Richarlison, who unfortunately picked up an injury in training, so he'll probably miss the next few weeks."

Meanwhile, Newcastle are set to be without Joe Willock after he sustained a thigh injury at Nottingham Forest on Wednesday. The midfielder was making his first start since April and opened the scoring after just 18 seconds but needed to be replaced in the 15th minute.

"Joe had a scan yesterday [Thursday], an early scan,” said Howe. “It is relatively good news. I don't think it is a serious injury, but it is early, so we will re-scan again in a few days again just to confirm that."

Callum Wilson remains sidelined with a back injury - he is yet to feature in pre-season or in the opening three games, but could return after the international when the Magpies take on Wolverhampton Wanderers. Lewis Miley, Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles are long-term injuries.

United’s biggest absence is Fabian Schar, who scored in last season’s 4-0 win at St James’ Park, due to suspension.

Schar was shown a straight red card for violent conduct after clashing with Ben Brereton Diaz against Southampton on the opening day. Howe’s side appealed the suspension but it was upheld, resulting in a three-match ban.

Football Association rules state: “A player who, when not challenging for the ball, deliberately strikes an opponent or any other person on the head or face with the hand or arm, is guilty of violent conduct unless the force used was negligible.”

Newcastle argued that the force Schar used when ‘striking’ Brereton Diaz was negligible but an independent panel disagreed.
