There has now been a shock transfer development at Tottenham.
Spurs were rejected by Mathys Tel earlier in the window – despite agreeing a €60m (£50m) fee with Bayern Munich for the France U21 international.
The 19-year-old has since been looked at by Arsenal and Manchester United, although neither Premier League side could reach an agreement with Bayern Munich nor the Frenchman.
Now – however – Mathys Tel is on his way to Tottenham in a surprise development.
Mathys Tel makes U-turn on Tottenham
In what is a truly incredible story, the teenager has now changed his mind and agreed to join Tottenham.
Tel – who Tim Sherwood told to join Spurs just hours ago – will link up with Ange Postecoglou on an initial loan deal, and is already on a plane to England with his agent, Gadiri Camara.
Speaking live on Sky Sports from outside Hotspur Way, correspondent Michael Bridge said: “We say never say never on deadline day, this is absolutely incredible.
“My cameraman said, can you imagine Mathys Tel turning up here, that was at 7am. I went, I can’t see it, but wow.
“Breaking news. Mathys Tel has done a U-turn and said yes to Tottenham Hotspur. Quite incredible breaking news here. What we know is that Tel is on a plane and it looks like it is going to London potentially and not Manchester, that is what we are told. Massive breaking news. Friday we were told Mathys Tel said thanks but no thanks – but it seems he has changed his mind.”
Tottenham will NOT have an option or obligation to buy the Sarcelles-born striker this summer at the end of his loan deal.
Where Ange Postecoglou should use Mathys Tel
The talented Frenchman can play anywhere across the frontline, so Spurs are getting a versatile forward.
Looking at the numbers, Postecoglou would be wise to deploy Tel – who has been compared to Thierry Henry – on the left.
The prodigy who joined Bayern Munich for Rennes in a £25m deal – aged just 17 – has scored eight goals and provided five assists in 34 appearances on the left throughout his career.
In comparison, Tel has only netted five goals and provided one assist in 33 appearances in the centre, while bagging four and one assist in 14 games on the right.
