Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham boast two of the biggest stadiums in the Premier League but the league’s largest, Old Trafford, is set to become even bigger under new plans unveiled by Manchester United.
The Red Devils plan to build the biggest stadium in the UK with a new £2 billion project that will see a 100,000-seater ground erected close to Old Trafford. Once building is complete, it is expected that Old Trafford will be demolished.
The three newest Premier League stadiums are all currently in London. West Ham moved into the London Stadium in 2016, with the stadium first opening in 2011 ahead of the 2012 Olympics. The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium was then introduced in 2019 and Brentford arrived at the swanky Gtech Community Stadium in 2020.
Manchester United to move to new stadium in 2030
Manchester United have been playing in Old Trafford since 1910 and the new ground is expected to open for the 2030/31 season. Between then and now, Everton will play in the newest top flight ground with the club moving to the Everton Stadium for next season.
The new Manchester United stadium is set to feature an umbrella design and a public plaza ‘twice the size of Trafalgar Square’. There will be a ‘trident’ that reaches 200 metres high and is visible from 25 miles away.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe said: "Today marks the start of an incredibly exciting journey to the delivery of what will be the world's greatest stadium. Our current stadium has served us brilliantly for the past 115 years but it has fallen behind the arenas in world sport. I think we may well finish up with the most iconic football stadium in the world."
