Spurs thrash Man City 4-0 to end 52-match unbeaten home run

James Maddison struck twice in seven first-half minutes before Pedro Porro rubbed salt in the wounds of his former club and Brennan Johnson completed the rout.

City's first defeat on home soil from open play since the eve of the 2022 World Cup leaves them still five points adrift of Premier League leaders Liverpool, who play their game in hand at bottom-of-the-table Southampton on Sunday. A great day for Tottenham eases the pressure on Ange Postecoglou as they climb into the top six.

City boss Pep Guardiola has committed himself to turning around the poorest run of his managerial career after extending his contract till 2027 this week. But hopes his new deal could revitalise a City side, that has won an unprecedented four consecutive Premier League titles, proved short-lived.

Rodri paraded his Ballon d'Or trophy to the home fans before kick-off as his name was lit up across the Etihad pitch by firelight in an ostentatious show of support for the Spanish midfielder. The 28-year-old is not expected to play again this season after suffering knee ligament damage in September and his absence has been at the heart of City's demise.

Guardiola's men did start strongly as Guglielmo Vicario denied Erling Haaland and the Norwegian had another shot deflected wide. But the momentum of the match completely swung on Tottenham's first serious attack after 13 minutes.

Dejan Kulusevski's teasing cross picked out Maddison who applied a cool first-time finish. Maddison had found himself frozen out of Postecoglou's starting line-up in recent weeks and was keen to prove a point to his manager.

Son Heung-min's inventive pass freed the England international inside the box and he dinked the ball over the advancing Ederson to double Spurs' lead. Inconsistency has been the scourge of Tottenham's season so far.

A 2-1 home defeat to Ipswich before the international break saw Postecoglou's men slip to 10th in the table. But they have now twice won comprehensively in Manchester after a 3-0 win over United at Old Trafford.

Dominic Solanke was denied by a fine Ederson save with the chance to make it 3-0 before half-time. Spurs, though, were not to be denied seven minutes into the second period.

The excellent Kulusevski crossed for Solanke and he patiently laid the ball back for Porro to blast home from close range. Haaland clipped the bar from an almost impossible angle as City laboured to find a response.

Instead, they were hit with one final sucker punch as Timo Werner eased past Kyle Walker and crossed for Johnson to tap home at the far post. The one glimmer of hope for City may be the return of Kevin De Bruyne after a two-month injury absence as a late substitute.

Postecoglou says Spurs out-battled in Palace loss

Jean-Philippe Mateta scored the only goal of the game just after the half-hour mark at Selhurst Park to seal Palace's first Premier League win of the season. Spurs defender Micky van de Ven was easily dispossessed deep in his own half before Daniel Munoz's cross found Ebere Eze. He in turn set up Mateta, with the Frenchman on target with a low finish.

Defeat by one of their London rivals left Spurs eighth in the table, with Postecoglou's men now having lost four of their nine league matches so far this term. Inconsistency has been a perennial problem for Tottenham, last crowned champions of England in 1961, with Postecoglou accepting a Spurs side missing injured captain Son Heung-min had been outfought by Palace.

"It was one of those games with a lot of stoppages and battles and they (Palace) ended up winning a lot of them and coming out on top," Postecoglou told the 'BBC'. "There was a lot of disruption and it was hard to get any fluency. They did better than us.

"It turned into a game they were thriving on and we should have dealt with it better. It was a poor goal to concede, it had nothing to do with playing out from the back. That can happen."

The Australian added: "I'd be very surprised if they (Spurs supporters) were happy right now. Why would I be happy? If I'm unhappy then they'll be unhappy."

Mohammed Kudus was sent off late for West Ham in Saturday's defeat to Tottenham. The striker kicked Micky van de Ven before hitting the defender in the head, leading to a brawl between the two sides. In the midst of the players arguing, he followed up by pushing Pape Matar Sarr in the head.

After scoring the opening goal of the match at the 18th minute, Kudus was shown a straight red card at the 86th minute, as Tottenham had already turned the game around with four goals before the hour mark. VAR intervened as referee Madley had initially spared the Ghanian with a yellow card.

The 24-year-old will now be suspended for the Hammers' next fixture against Manchester United next weekend, but three violent incidents in quick succession could push the FA to punish him further. A final decision will be announced in the coming days, but for now, Kudus will only miss Red Devils clash.

Tottenham boss Postecoglou not shaken by 'Spursy' comments

Spurs' habit of failing to fulfil their potential and wasting favourable positions across matches and seasons, has been dubbed "Spursy" by irritated fans. The north-Londoners, trophyless in 16 years, have stuck stubbornly to that script in their first two seasons under Ange Postecoglou.

They wasted a golden opportunity to qualify for the Champions League last year and have made an rocky start to the current campaign. Postecoglou's side blew a 2-0 lead over Brighton to lose 3-2 in their last game before the October international break. But this was far from a one-time occasion, in fact, it was the 10th time Spurs have lead by two or more goals and subsequently lost in the Premier League era.

Saturday's London derby against West Ham comes with unpleasent memories of the team blowing a three-goal lead to draw 3-3 in four yeas ago. Postecoglu has acknowledged success is now imperative to lift the mood, though he has equally said that he deems criticism to be irrelevant. "You say it's 10 times but it hasn't been 10 times with me so give me a break. Let me get to 10 and then start putting tags on, but you have to accept that, right?" the Australian told reporters during his press conference on Friday.

"People will always find easy ways, if you've got a wound, to stick their finger in that wound and if you're not prepared to accept that when things haven't gone well, make sure things go well," he added. "There is one way to change that. If we want to change the perception of ourselves, it will not come because of, 'please don't call us those names', it will come because we're proving we're a team that can be relentless in our approach and be successful."

Manchester City picked up where they left off last season with a 2-0 win at Chelsea to begin their Premier League title defence as Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United also got off to winning starts.

However, not all matchday 1 fixtures have been played in the English top-flight. Tottenham Hotspur visit the King Power Stadium on Monday to face newly-promoted Leicester City for the first time this season.

Leicester striker Patson Daka will not be available to help the Foxes at home but neither will he be ready for the next few games. The Zambia international suffered the setback during Leicester's final pre-season friendly with Lens and has undergone surgery.

Leicester also have the threat of a points deduction hanging over them for alleged breaches of the Premier League's profit and sustainability rules, with the Foxes having no plans to sign new players before Monday's match with Spurs.

Elsewhere, Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou said midfielder Yves Bissouma has been suspended for Monday's trip to Leicester after he was seen inhaling laughing gas in a video on social media.

Leicester City starting XI: Hermansen (GK); Justin, Faes, Vestergaard, Kristiansen; Ndidi, Buonanotte, Winks; Fatawu, Vardy and Bobby Reid.
