Sheffield United could turn their attentions elsewhere in their pursuit of defensive additions if they fail to make a breakthrough over QPR’s Jimmy Dunne, The Star understands. The Blades have made Dunne their top centre-half target before Monday’s transfer deadline but saw a bid rejected by the Londoners recently.

Dunne is out of contract at Loftus Road in the summer and is yet to commit to fresh terms, with United keen for centre-half reinforcements after losing Leicester City loanee Harry Souttar to a season-ending Achilles’ injury. Dunne’s name featured on a long list of potential targets drawn up before the window opened, with Harry Darling of Swansea City and Ipswich Town’s Luke Woolfenden also inked upon it.

But United will not be held to ransom in the transfer market and if they cannot strike a satisfactory deal for Dunne they will move on to alternative targets. The Star understands that Millwall’s Japhet Tanganga is one potential name that the Blades could move for, with the former England U21 international enjoying something of a resurgence after moving to The Den from Tottenham Hotspur.

Speaking earlier this week boss Chris Wilder confirmed a bid had been placed for a defensive target but added: “There are other players on that list and we're working tirelessly. And we will do that until the end of the window. There'll be a couple coming available over the weekend, without a shadow of a doubt, because that's always the case. As we've seen previously here, and in the window.

“We're ready to do business and if it's not a permanent and it doesn't fit, or it's too expensive or the wages are too high or the selling club's fee is too high and not reasonable for us and our valuation, then we'll walk away and we'll go again. But losing Souttar was a huge blow to us and we certainly need someone in that position to fill that gap.”

Sheffield United retain a real appetite to keep hold of promising striker Ryan One in this window and beyond, after the Scottish youth international was linked with a host of top-flight clubs. The physical 18-year-old has had frequent tastes of first-team football this season, scoring his first senior goal to kickstart the remarkable comeback win at Bristol City late last year.

One’s potential has not gone unnoticed elsewhere, with a number of Premier League sides said to be monitoring his situation. But United moved smartly back in August to tie the striker down to a long-term deal, which runs until the summer of 2029. That means that the ball is firmly in their court when it comes to the teenager’s future, with a loan exit before the transfer deadline next week still the most likely avenue.

Reports this weekend suggested that top-flight strugglers Ipswich Town had made the first formal move for One’s services but The Star understands that no contact from the Tractor Boys has been made to the corridors of power at Bramall Lane. We reported on Friday night that United’s near-neighbours Rotherham United had made an enquiry over the striker, while a host of clubs in the lower leagues are expected to make plays before the window slams shut.

One was scouted during his time north of the border with Hamilton Academical, with boss Chris Wilder acknowledging the part played by former head of recruitment Paul Mitchell in identifying a player who had made just a couple of starts in the Scottish Championship.

The 19-year-old shot-stopper has barely played for the Owls at senior level, making almost as many first team appearances for his nation, Northern Ireland, as he has done in Wednesday colours, however he has shown real quality when he has taken to the field, and few are surprised at the sort of clubs said to be keeping tabs on his progress.

Danny Röhl has spoken highly of Charles for months, discussing his progress at Middlewood Road as he continues to learn under the watchful eye of the Owls boss as well as respected goalkeeper coach, Sal Bibbo. The talented teen was called upon throughout this season’s Carabao Cup run, and impressed with his work with the ball at his feet as much as his actual goalkeeping.

The Star previously reported that a number of Premier League clubs were watching Charles as they weighed up making a move for him, and it’s understood that there are is also a long list of admirers should he become available on a loan basis once the January transfer window opens up in a few days’ time.

Aston Villa are one club that are thought to have been keeping an eye on the former Manchester City academy ‘keeper, and now it has been reported by journalist, Darren Witcoop, that Spurs have also ‘considered’ Charles alongside other options between the sticks.

“Burnley keeper James Trafford one to keep eye on in January,” he said. “A £16m move to Newcastle collapsed in summer but Tottenham admirers. Sunderland’s Anthony Patterson & Sheffield Wednesday rookie Pierce Charles also considered as EFL options.”

Wednesday currently have James Beadle as their number one as things stand, and while Charles has been the name on the bench for Röhl ahead of veteran stopper, Ben Hamer, a decision may be made in January to give their NI international a chance to get regular senior minutes under his belt elsewhere.

Forgotten Sheffield United man Ryan Leonard will miss the reunion with his former club on Wednesday night when the Blades travel to his current club Millwall. Leonard signed for United in 2018 from Southend, after a long transfer chase, but played only a handful of times before joining the Lions on loan.

His stay at the Den was then made permanent in 2019 and the 32-year-old has established himself as a fans’ favourite in London, starting every game for Neil Harris’ side this season. But he will miss Wednesday night’s clash through suspension, after picking up his fifth yellow card of the season in a 1-0 defeat to Coventry City on Saturday.

Leonard was filling in at centre-half against Coventry amongst something of an injury crisis but his absence is eased by the return of former Tottenham Hotspur man Japhet Tanganga from suspension, and the injury comebacks of Shaun Hutchinson and Billy Mitchell.

One of the players considered by Sheffield Wednesday in their vast summer recruitment push looks set for a move away from Tottenham Hotspur - despite the closure of the transfer window.

The Star revealed last month that Tottenham Hotspur youngster Alfie Devine was a transfer window consideration for Sheffield Wednesday as the Owls looked to put the finishing touches on their squad before last week’s summer window deadline.

Wednesday brought in 11 senior players in a whirlwind revamp of the squad and their last deal of the summer saw Shea Charles sign on loan from Southampton, a player of a similar profile to that of Devine, as Danny Röhl sought to strengthen in midfield.

Despite further reported interest from elsewhere, the deadline passed without Devine securing a move away from Spurs. Football.london now report, however, that the England youth international is set for a switch despite the closure of the UK window and that he is on his way to Belgium. Reports on Wednesday afternoon suggested he was on his way for a medical with top tier side Westerlo, who finished 11th in the Belgian Pro League last season.

Devine was named on the bench in Spurs’ 2-1 defeat at Newcastle United over the weekend but appears to be able to leave the club to continue his development. The 20-year-old starred in loan stints with Port Vale and Plymouth Argyle last season and is hotly-tipped.

Sheffield Wednesday are certainly not finished in the transfer market, and a new potential target has surfaced - Tottenham Hotspur’s Alfie Devine.

The Owls have had a busy summer in Danny Röhl’s first big transfer window, signing 10 players so far as the German looks to build a side capable of improving on last season’s Championship placing.

They’ve got off to a fine start with wins over Plymouth Argyle in the league and Hull City in the Carabao Cup, and this weekend their attentions turn to Sunderland in a game that may well be the first major test of the work that has been done since the end of the 2023/24 campaign.

Wednesday are in the process of trying to find more space in their squad by offloading players - both permanent and on loan - in order to bolster their squad further, with Mallik Wilks the latest to depart after he joined Rotherham United in League One for the upcoming season.

A number of names are believed to be being considered by Röhl, and The Star understands that one of them that has been mentioned is Spurs youngster, Devine, who has been part of the club’s preseason at first team level recently since his loan spell with Plymouth came to an end, however it is thought that they are open to the idea of him heading out on a temporary basis once again for 2024/25.

Devine is a long-serving England youth international having represented his country at various levels - winning the 2022 U19 European Championships - and last year was drafted into Gareth Southgate’s squad at one point after an injury to Bukayo Saka.

The 20-year-old attacking midfielder, who also played out wide on occasion for the Pilgrims last season, featured against Bayern Munich this month as Ange Postecoglou prepares his side for the upcoming Premier League campaign.
