Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou admitted that Cristian Romero’s injury is “hugely disappointing” after the centre-back lasted just 14 minutes against Chelsea after picking up a quad problem.

Romero and Micky van de Ven both returned to the starting line-up after spells out as Spurs threw away a 2-0 lead to lose 4-3 against Chelsea at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Romero’s injury meant Van de Ven played longer than planned as he went down late in the game but Postecoglou played down any concerns. Brennan Johnson was also withdraw but he was feeling ill.

“Romero is just obviously hugely disappointing,” Postecoglou said afterwards. “He felt something in his quad. He trained really well. He wasn't the one I was worried about, to be honest, but it's just the way the season's going for us unfortunately. So we just have to wait and see. Brennan just didn't feel well. He didn't feel well at half-time, but he wanted to give it a go, but he just wasn't feeling 100 per cent, so I had to take him off. And then, well, the plan was always for Micky to play 60, 70 [minutes] today. Obviously, I thought Romero would be okay to play 90, but Mickey, probably 60,70. So we were always going take him off. He didn't feel anything significant. He just felt tightness, but we were always going to take him off anyway.”

On Romero, he continued: “It's a totally different injury, but also people I'm sure are aware of our situation. It's not like I've got a multitude of options there, so, you know, you've got to make these decisions. Both players trained and tried well, and they both wanted to help. So you make these decisions with all the best information. Like I said, it's not like Romero re-injured his toe, it's a totally different injury, which could happen at any time.”

Postecoglou was disappointed after with some of the decisions from the officials after Moises Caicedo caught Pape Sarr high on the shin but the Chelsea man was not even booked with VAR failing to intervene.

The Spurs boss said: “There’s a couple of decisions I thought today that definitely went against us. It almost feels like no-one is in control because everybody is scared to make a decision to overturn somebody else. Referees are scared to make decisions in case they get it wrong, VAR don’t want to intervene and I get that because you don’t want disruptions to the game. You just have to cop out. We worked awfully hard, but to give away two goals and you give away two penalties unnecessarily against a quality side anyway, you make things very difficult for yourself.”

The Premier League have announced that Anthony Taylor will officiate Sunday’s meeting between Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea - over two years on from his last game in charge of the derby between the two London sides.

Taylor refereed the dramatic 2-2 draw between the two clubs at Stamford Bridge back in August 2022. It is a fixture that is remembered for a fierce post-match handshake between Antonio Conte and Thomas Tuchel, who were in charge of the respective clubs at the time.

Harry Kane scored an equaliser in the sixth minute of second-half stoppage time but only after replays showed Cristian Romero had pulled Marc Cucurella’s hair. Taylor did not appear to get a good view of the incident while VAR neglected to recommend an on-field review. A year later, VAR official at the time Mike Dean admitted he did not correct the mistake to save Taylor from added “grief”.

"I missed the stupid hair pull at Chelsea versus Tottenham which was pathetic from my point of view," Dean told Simon Jordan's Up Front podcast. "It's one of them where if I had my time again, what would I do? I'd send Anthony [Taylor] to the screen. I think I knew if I did send him to the screen… he's cautioned both managers, he's had a hell of a game, it's been such a tough game end to end. I said to Anthony afterwards: 'I just didn't want to send you to the screen after what has gone on in the game.' I didn't want to send him up because he is a mate as well as a referee and I think I didn't want to send him up because I didn't want any more grief than he already had."

Earlier in the game, Chelsea were incensed that Taylor had not penalised Rodrigo Bentancur for a tackle on Kai Havertz, resulting in a melee that saw both managers booked. Chelsea fans set up a petition for Taylor to never take charge of another game involving the Blues, with it gaining over 150,000 online signatures. Taylor has taken charge of two Chelsea games this season, the 2-0 defeat to Manchester City on the opening day as well as the hard-fought 1-0 away win at Bournemouth. He has been the man in the middle for just one Spurs game this season, as he officiated the 4-0 victory over Everton back in August.

Gary Beswick and Adam Nunn will be Taylor’s assistants at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium while the fourth official is Lewis Smith. Jarred Gillet will be on VAR with Mark Scholes his assistant at Stockley Park. The fixture kicks off at 4.30pm.

Former Newcastle United striker Alan Shearer felt Tottenham Hotspur striker Dominic Solanke was “bossed” by Bournemouth defender Dean Huijsen at the Vitality Stadium on Thursday night.

The Cherries picked up a 1-0 victory with Huijsen scoring the only goal of the game as he ran to the back post to head home a corner unmarked on 17 minutes. The 19-year-old had a shaky moment early in the game as he made a mistake to allow Solanke a chance at goal but the Spurs striker was unable to take advantage of the opportunity.

That moment aside, Shearer was hugely impressed with how Solanke was limited by Huijsen. He said on Amazon Prime commentary: "He [Huijsen] has been absolutely fantastic tonight. I can't remember him losing the ball, other than that one in the first half. He has been faultless. He has bossed Solanke, controlled him."

Huijsen was named player of the match and said of the result: "We know it is difficult to come here. We know we make it difficult for the big teams, and the others as well really. It is a recall exciting win. I think every little boy dreams of playing in the Premier League and I am so happy to be playing in it and to have scored my first goal. It is definitely a special memory. A goosebumps moment. It is a special thing to be Bournemouth's youngest Premier League scorer and I hope to stay in the team now and carry on playing.

“[The goal] is all down to our trainer. We have scored a few set piece goals this season because of him. It was my job to finish it and I did, so that was great. We will work on that [scoring more goals], but as a team it was great. A good performance and a good win. We know Tottenham is also a very physical team so I think it was a great match up and a great match to watch for the fans watching at home and in the stadium. First of all we need to avoid relegation but I think we have a bit more in us. Who knows. Maybe we can get a Conference League place or something if we keep working and pushing like this."

Former Tottenham striker Les Ferdinand felt that Spurs lacked a threat as they had 12 shots compared to Bournemouth’s 21. He said: “Every time Bournemouth went forward, they looked like scoring. Tottenham didn't. There was no urgency, no physicality, didn't win any 50-50 tackles. We didn't know what Spurs would turn up and it wasn't this one the fans wanted.”

Ange Postecoglou expressed his frustration about his Tottenham Hotspur side consistently giving their rivals a “leg up” in games as Spurs slipped to their sixth defeat of the Premier League season.

The North London club lost 1-0 to Bournemouth on Thursday night, in a result that saw the Cherries leapfrog Spurs in the table. Dean Huijsen scored the only goal of the game as he headed home from a corner after 17 minutes. Since beating Manchester City immediately after the international break, Spurs have drawn with Fulham and Roma along with their loss to Bournemouth.

Reflecting on the game, the former Celtic boss said: "We started well and conceded a really poor goal. It's a difficult place to come when giving the opposition the opportunity to play in the manner they want. It's disappointing. It's something we've done consistently and we always pay the price for it.

"We started the second half with more conviction. Always be a tough game here. Don't want to give the opposition a leg up. We've done that in other games this year and paid the price. It comes down to us as a collective being a lot more determined to control a game of football and not let the opposition take control."

Spurs defender Destiny Udogie expressed frustration over the nature of the defeat, as he said: "We came here to win and it didn't go that way. We have to stay together and focus on the next game. They played their game. It was a tough game. Big disappointment to concede a goal like this. It's not the best time for us with injuries but as a group we have to stick together."

Up next for Spurs is the visit of in-form Chelsea, who won 5-1 at Southampton on Wednesday and sit second in the table after losing just two of their opening 14 games.

Tottenham Hotspur star Yves Bissouma will need to avoid being booked over the busy Premier League festive period in order to avoid a one-game ban after picking up his fourth yellow card of the season.

The 28-year-old was cautioned in the first half of Spurs’ clash at the Vitality Stadium against Bournemouth for hauling down Justin Kluivert. An advantage was initially played before referee Simon Hooper came back to show Bissouma the yellow card. Speaking on commentary, former Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle United striker Alan Shearer felt it was a fair decision, as he said: "He was always going to back to that and book Bissouma.”

Up next for Spurs is the visit of Chelsea on Sunday afternoon. A booking in that fixture will see Bissouma banned for the trip to Southampton on December 15 but if he features and is cautioned against the Saints, he will miss the visit of Liverpool on December 22. Spurs also have games against Nottingham Forest, Wolves and Newcastle United coming up in which Bissouma will need to work hard on his discipline in order to avoid a one-match suspension.

Premier League suspension rules state that any player who accumulates five yellow cards in their first 19 matches will be issued with a one-game ban. 10 yellows before a player’s 32nd game will result in a two-match ban. The suspension for five or 10 yellow cards is specific to the Premier League and cannot be served in the FA Cup or League Cup. Spurs have a Carabao Cup quarter-final against Manchester United on December 19. Bissouma is the third Spurs player to reach four yellow cards in the Premier League this season, with Micky van de Ven and Rodrigo Bentacur also on that total. Van de Ven is currently out with injury while Bentacur is serving a seven-game ban.

Spurs fell to another Premier League defeat as they lost 1-0 at Bournemouth. Dominic Solanke missed an early chance to put the away side ahead before Dean Huijsen opened the scoring as he netted on 17 minutes. It highlights Tottenham’s struggles with consistency this season. Ange Postecoglou’s side lost to Ipswich Town before the international break but returned to action with a stunning 4-0 win over Manchester City. However, they drew 2-2 with Roma and 1-1 versus Fulham ahead of their trip to the south coast on Thursday.

Chelsea may have put five goals past a self-sabotaging Southampton on Wednesday night but it was one of the Blues' defensive players who turned heads at St Mary's Stadium.

Axel Disasi, Christopher Nkunku, Noni Madueke, Cole Palmer and Jadon Sancho were all among the goals as Enzo Maresca saw five different outfield players hit the back of the net. The Blues dominated in that game but, despite the scoreline, Russell Martin's men did have their own chances.

It was the Saints who nearly took the lead as a skittled Chelsea defence allowed Joe Aribo in on goal, the visitors saved by a sensational save from summer signing Filip Jorgensen. The £20 million man won plaudits for that stop and was called into action multiple times on Wednesday, making confident stops and looking hugely impressive in the Blues' goal.

His efforts earned a 9/10 player rating by LondonWorld. As the full-time whistle went we wrote: "Called into action a few times by a Southampton side that might have posed a danger if not for the capitulation. A very impressive performance that will do nothing but strengthen his case for the starting role. A particularly good save early on against Joe Aribo was vital."

It is with some incredulity therefore that one of the first things Maresca confirmed after the match was that Jorgensen would be dropped for this weekend's big London derby against Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge. Making it crystal clear, he said: "That day we are going to play Sanchez and 10 players. The only one that is sure is Sanchez."

That is likely to be a decision that will anger many Chelsea supporters, and with good reason. Sanchez had started every Premier League match this season before the trip to Southampton but had come under fire for some high-profile errors and questionable distribution.

That had led to many asking why their £20 million summer signing wasn't being afforded a chance to impress in the top flight under Maresca, having shown his solidity when donning the gloves in European action. It was exciting to see Jorgensen picked against Southampton and, if truth be told, there's nothing more he could have done to earn the right to start again against Spurs this weekend.

While competition in the squad is healthy, it feels as if Maresca is walking a fine line with his selection games. Chelsea won't want the fracas and distraction that Arsenal saw between David Raya and Aaron Ramsdale last season.

Enzo Maresca maintains Robert Sanchez backing

Indeed, there is little that seems capable of lowering Sanchez in Maresca's thinking. After the shot-stopper was criticised for his role in Curtis Jones' Liverpool goal against Chelsea earlier this season, the former Leicester City manager said: “I’m very happy with Robert, he’s doing fantastic with us. Not only in building from the back but also making saves.”

The Chelsea boss has gone has far as to take the blame for the player's mistakes himself too, in particular distribution. He has said: “In the end, that is football. I am the guy who asks Robert to do that. And Robert is going to do that. In the moment he stops to do that, he is not going to play. If Robert makes a mistake, it’s not Robert’s problem, it’s my mistake because I asked that from Robert.

“I am very happy with Robert and the way he is playing, building from the back. All the goal kicks we have and he passes the ball to Noni, and Pedro, that kind of ball that gives us many times chances to attack. Sometimes you make mistakes but it is not going to change the way we are going to play.”

The former Brighton man will return to the starting XI against Ange Postecoglou's men this weekend, but what more can the talented Jorgensen do to make that spot his own?

Tottenham Hotspur and Fulham have received a boost as Southampton centre-back Jack Stephens will miss four matches due to picking up his second red card of the season.

It means that Stephens won’t be available for selection against either team and he will also miss a Carabao Cup quarter-final against Liverpool after getting sent off during Southampton’s 5-1 defeat against Chelsea on Wednesday night.

The Saints’ skipper was seen to pull defender Marc Cucurella’s hair during the game and VAR ruled it to be a red-card offence, his second of the season after just 13 matches. It means that Stephens will have missed nine of Southampton’s opening 21 games just down to suspensions.

He was due to play against Spurs on Sunday 15 December and against Fulham on Sunday 22 December, but will now miss both of those games due to the sending-off that he endured against Chelsea at St Mary’s on Wednesday night.

Speaking to the Daily Echo, Southampton manager Russell Martin, who remains under pressure, said: “I don't think anyone has been as disappointed as Jack. I haven't got to sit down with him and talk about that at all. I think he'll be hurt more than anyone but it's changed the game for us tonight which is disappointing. He's been amazing for us.”

Tottenham star remains suspended for Saints clash

Despite Southampton’s suspension concerns, Spurs still have problems of their own in the form of midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur who remains unavailable until Boxing Day after his comments regarding teammate Heung-Min Son which were deemed racist by the Football Association (FA).

The Uruguay international has been out since mid-November due to the suspension and will miss key fixtures against Chelsea, Manchester United and Liverpool before returning for an away trip to Nottingham Forest on Boxing Day.

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou told Sky Sports in response to Bentancur’s ban: “I get that people want to burn people at the stake these days but if you want real education and progress, understanding that when someone makes a mistake and pays the penalty, part of that process is education and treating it in a way that is the way forward.”

Tottenham Hotspur could move to within touching distance of a top four spot when they visit Premier League rivals Bournemouth on Thursday night.

After following up their recent 4-0 win at reigning Premier League champions Manchester City with what felt like an underwhelming home draw against Fulham last weekend, Ange Postecoglou’s men head into the trip to the Vitality Stadium sat on the fringes of the top six. Spurs will keep a close eye on events across the Premier League on Wednesday night as several of their rivals for a place in Europe are in action - and will hope results fall in their favour as they put together the final preparations for the trip to the south coast.

Bournemouth have struggled to find consistency so far this season - but despite sitting in the bottom half of the Premier League, the Cherries could actually leapfrog Spurs in the table with a win on Thursday night. The warning signs are all too clear to see for Postecoglou and his players as their hosts have already claimed home wins against Arsenal and Manchester City so far this season. Both managers are facing some big calls ahead of the game as a number of key players close in on a return to contention - but who could feature and who will miss out when Bournemouth host Spurs at the Vitality Stadium on Thursday night?

Bournemouth team news

There has already been one major boost handed to Cherries boss Iraola as Antoine Semenyo returns from a suspension and the former Rayo Vallecano head coach with hope for more positivity as he awaits confirmation key midfielder Lewis Cook will return to contention after recovering from a muscle injury. However, the game will come too soon for midfielder Alex Scott and winger Luis Sinisterra, who are both pencilled in to return later this month as they reach the final stages of their recoveries from respective knee and thigh injuries. Former Barcelona wing-back Julian Araujo also remains on the sidelines and he appears to be some way away from recovering from a thigh injury.

Tottenham Hotspur team news

Injuries have hampered Spurs boss Postecoglou throughout the season and he appears to have been without key players on a weekly basis. However, there is some hope both Dominic Solanke (illness) and summer signing Archie Gray will be available to face the Cherries. There appeared to be a slim chance of Cristian Romero returning from an ankle injury during the game - but they were washed away by Postecoglou in his pre-match press conference.

He said: “He's due to have his last couple of sessions with the rehab guys today and tomorrow, so we're hoping, in terms of training, potentially [back] by Friday. At the very latest, early next week if everything goes well.”

Rodrigo Bentancur definitely misses out as he continues to serve a suspension he received for comments made over Spurs team-mate Son Heung-min and the game will come too soon for Micky van de Ven and Mikey Moore, who should return to contention before the end of the month. Richarlison’s thigh injury will keep him on the sidelines until next month and both goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario and winger Wilson Odobert are still out of action as they continue their rehabilitation from ankle and hamstring injuries.

Tottenham Hotspur have already made their first signing of the January transfer window as they announced the addition of 18-year-old Yang Min-Hyeok back in the summer from South Korean side Gangwon FC.

Tottenham confirmed the signing on their official website back in July as they paid £3.3m for Min-Hyeok who plays as a winger and quickly became a star in the K-League despite being just 18 years old. He has represented South Korea at U16 and U17 levels.

The attacker signed a contract which is due to keep him at Spurs until 2030 when he will turn 24 years old. In their announcement, the club said: “Yang has progressed through the K League Under-18 Championship to become a first-team regular at Gangwon FC – making 25 appearances this season, contributing eight goals and four assists.”

In just his second year playing professional football, the 18-year-old was awarded the K-League Young Player of the Year and a place in the K-League XI of the season. He was also nominated for the ‘MVP’ award but narrowly lost out. Min-Hyeok will join up with Tottenham to start training in the near future before his arrival will become official on New Year’s Day when the January transfer window opens for business. It is unlikely that he will make any Premier League appearances this season, but could develop into a star for Ange Postecoglou’s side.

The reason for his delayed move to Spurs is due to the timing of the K-League season. It runs over the course of a calendar year rather than August to May. He scored 12 goals and provided six assists in 38 games as Gangwon FC finished second in the table, eight points behind champions Ulsan HD.

Ange Postecoglou keen on adding attacking help in January

The Spurs boss had made it clear that he wants to sign more attackers during the upcoming transfer windows after his side has been dealing with several injury problems this season with forward players.

Richarlison, Mikey Moore, Dominic Solanke and Wilson Odobert are currently dealing with absences meaning that Postecoglou has a limited number of options in attacking positions. Speaking to the media ahead of their game against Bournemouth, Postecoglou said: “ Yeah, there is no doubt because when you add Wilson to that, even Mikey, we had Dom out on weekend, you hope that alleviates.

“With Wilson it's long-term, hopefully, Mikey by the turn of the year will be back as well, but he's 17. With Richy, [Richarlison] it has been frustrating because I see the potential in him and to be fair when he's been fit he's always made an impact, for me anyway.

"Even the little games he's played this year, he's made an impact. So, you know, that's what you kind of hold on to, but there's no doubt we need some bolstering in that front third over the next couple of transfer windows.”

Tottenham Hotspur are assessing their transfer options as they consider striking during the January window. With just weeks left until we wave goodbye to 2024, clubs are starting to prepare for business to open again following a busy summer.

The competition in the Premier League is heating up at both the top and bottom of the table. As each club prepares to enter the new year with their respective missions in sight, we’ve rounded up the latest transfer rumours for Spurs and Ange Postecoglou.

Spurs rival Nottingham for £25m centre-back

Tottenham are currently in the running to bolster their backline with the signing of young centre-back Abdukodir Khusanov from Lens. The 20-year-old was signed just 18 months ago from Belarusian side Energetik-BGU Minsk in a deal worth just €100,000 (£82,800) and he has quickly forced his way into their senior side.

Khusanov has featured in all but two Ligue 1 fixtures so far this season, which he missed due to a red card suspension. The Uzbekistan international is under contract with Lens until 2027 but according to The Telegraph, he is ‘attracting scouts from Europe’s top teams’, including seven Premier League clubs. Paris Saint-Germain have been linked with Khusanov but Spurs and Newcastle United are also ‘chasing’ the rising star.

Lens are in good stead to make a significant profit on the defender, who could command more than £25 million in the current market, with room for that figure to increase. Spurs will reportedly decide whether they need a new centre-back in January, following their recent spell of unfortunate luck with injuries.

La Liga side ‘willing to negotiate hard’ for Spurs outcast

It is becoming increasingly obvious that Sergio Reguilón is not part of the bigger picture at Tottenham and will be leaving in 2025 either in the January window or as a free agent. Fortunately, it seems the defender already has an option available him, which could involve a return home to Spain.

According to Spanish outlet Superdeporte, La Liga side Getafe are interested in signing Reguilón and are ‘willing to negotiate hard’ for his signature. As he has experience with the likes of Real Madrid and Manchester United, Getafe are open to either a move in the winter window, or an approach at the end of the season when his contract expires.

Amid interest in a permanent move, Reguilón is also reportedly considering the option of going out on loan again. If this happens, it is an ‘indirect way’ of Tottenham confirming they will be parting ways with him. He is currently valued at €12 million (£10m).
