Fulham have entered the transfer race for the highly sought-after Angel Gomes ahead of the Lille midfielder becoming a free agent this summer.
The England international is not expected to sign a new deal with the Ligue 1 club and will have his pick of options in the top flight. Gomes previously played in the Premier League for Manchester United but never made a strong breakthrough into the senior team before moving to Lille in 2020.
West Ham are known to have offered Gomes a contract worth £100,000 a week but that is not thought to be enough to tempt the player to move to the London Stadium. Tottenham Hotspur had been named as frontrunners following news of failed West Ham contract negotiations but the latest report from TBR Football suggests that Fulham could hijack those hopes.
Fulham enter Angel Gomes transfer race
The outlet claims that Gomes is a firm target for the Cottagers this summer with the belief that he is the perfect fit for Marco Silva’s system. The Portuguese head coach has been linked with a move to Spurs himself with pressure on Ange Postecoglou and it’s added that the marquee signing of Gomes could go a long way to keep the manager at Craven Cottage.
Speaking about Gomes in September, following his call-up to the England squad, caretaker Three Lions boss Lee Carsley said: “Angel is someone who does it week-in, week-out for a team out in France. He is probably different to what we’ve seen in the past in terms of the central midfielder that is a little bit more physical, more robust.
“Angel is very technical, he controls the game with his skill and technique. He is very determined, has an excellent attitude, loves football and technically and tactically he is excellent.”
Marco Silva on Fulham transfer strategy
Silva has shared his frustration with Fulham’s selling of key players in recent windows, making it hard for him to build a project in west London. Joao Palhinha joined Bayern Munich for £47.5 million last summer with Tosin Adarabioyo also leaving for Chelsea on a free transfer.
Speaking this month, the Fulham boss said: “Our object, even losing players, is always to have better results and to achieve better things. You can lose important players, [but] we can sign new ones that can be more important players in the future for us, and that is the most important thing.
“That is reality [rebuilding a team]. If I’m not frustrated or not, I’m not going to change it. I cannot change it. In some moments, even if I would like to keep all of them and improve, to reinforce the squad, that is the reality of the club.
“We have to look at it as a challenge — no more than that — don’t cry about it. Okay, we have to find solutions. The club can take steps forward quicker if we don’t sell players, but that is the reality. We must find solutions.”
