Ange Postecoglou in ‘hugely disappointing’ Spurs injury update with three more added to Rangers absence list
Philippe Clement knows full well how difficult his job can be when Rangers have a lengthy injury list, and it is the same for any club.
Up next on the Europa League fixture list is Tottenham Hotspur with the manager’s opposite number Ange Postecoglou under pressure after a string of poor results.
What also doesn’t help his cause is having a string of key players missing which means that Rangers won’t have a better chance to beat Spurs.
Spurs injury problems mount ahead of Rangers Europa League clash
Clement’s own squad is starting to look a lot healthier with Oscar Cortes and Rabbi Matondo back in full training.
However, Postecoglou doesn’t quite have the same luck as the Gers boss and, when asked for an update on those who went off against Chelsea, said:
“(Cristian) Romero is just obviously hugely disappointing. He felt something in his quad. He trained really well. He wasn’t the one I was worried about, to be honest, but, you know, it’s just like I said, the way the season’s going for us unfortunately. So we just have to wait and see.”
“The plan was always for Micky (van de Ven) to play 60/70 today. Obviously, I thought Romero would be okay to play 90, but Micky, probably 60/70. So we were always going to take him off. He didn’t feel anything significant. He just felt tightness, but we were always going to take him off anyway.
“Brennan (Johnson) just didn’t feel well. He didn’t feel well at half-time, but he wanted to give it a go, but he just wasn’t feeling 100% so I had to take him off.”

When asked if he had risked Romero and Van de Ven, Postecoglou added: “No, Romero didn’t injure the same thing. It’s a totally different injury, but also people I’m sure are aware of our situation.
“It’s not like I’ve got a multitude of options there, so, you know, you’ve got to make these decisions. Both players trained and tried well, and they both wanted to help. So you make these decisions with all the best information. Like I said, it’s not like Romero re-injured his toe, it’s a totally different injury, which could happen at any time.”
How should Rangers approach the game against Spurs?
Spurs already have Guglielmo Ricario injured and Richarlison out of action and, given that they have just returned to fitness, Postecoglou is unlikely to risk those that came off against Chelsea.
This isn’t to say that the North London outfit won’t be able to put a strong team out, Clement’s comments about financial disparity might have been clumsy, but they are accurate.
The Gers boss isn’t one for sitting in against “better” teams and for all that Lyon ran out comfortable winners at Ibrox earlier in the campaign, the statistics show that Rangers went toe to toe and should have been in front on more than one occasion.
A similar attitude and better finishing might just see Thursday night added to a long list of famous European nights.
