The home team have been creaking a bit at the back as the Kazakhstani side realise they have the one-man advantage and look to make the most of it.

The latest situation sees Juninho again thwarted in the middle following a dangerous right-wing cross before a shot from 20 yards fizzes wide of target.

Juninho somehow contrives to side foot wide of the far post from six yards after a lovely cross from the left had unlocked the Spurs rearguard.

The first from the right flank is well headed clear while the second from the left is worked short and then gathered by Vicario at his near post.

Vicario comes off his line to push away a low delivery from the left with Juninho lurking just behind him in the hope of a tap-in.

You could argue Spurs were a touch sluggish in the opening moments but they have really stepped it up since Dragusin was given his marching orders.

You can't tell they are man down and have been the better side by some distance.

Mateusz Kochalski comes way off his line to the left edge of his area. Johnson beats him to Gray's long ball but then hooks just wide of the near post with the goal gaping.

The Spurs defender won't want to see this lapse again anytime soon.

Please note this video can only be viewed in the UK and Ireland.

It's desperate defending from the hosts as Abdellah Zoubir and Juninho raid at speed once more.

Zoubir takes too long trying to spin and engineer space for a shot 20 yards out and a trio of Tottenham shirts crowd him out.

Spurs v Qarabag Europa League tie delayed due to 'severe travel disruption' as Ange Postecoglou eyes European 'legacy'

Description

Spurs' opening 2024/25 UEFA Europa League game of the season at home to Qarabag on Thursday night has been hit with a lengthy delay.

"Kick-off for tonight’s fixture has been delayed due to severe travel disruption. Further information to follow," read a Spurs post on X at 7.16pm.

It was later confirmed by TNT Sports' Danny Jamieson - and Spurs - that the new kick-off time would be 20:35.

Why are Roma fans boycotting matches? Why are fans upset with owner Friedkin?

Ange Postecoglou had earlier joined the TNT Sports panel of Lynsey Hipgrave, Peter Crouch and Glenn Hoddle before the game, and had his say.

"You guys got to work hard tonight," Postecoglou quipped to the TNT trio.

"I stay out of the dressing room, the boys are pretty calm," he added.

"Once we know the start time we'll work back from that. Not ideal I guess, but whenever the kick-off is we'll be ready."

Spurs named a strong team for the encounter with their Azerbaijani opponents, featuring Son Heung-min and Dominic Solanke.

Talking about the prospect of a season in Europe and what it can bring to his group, Postecoglou said: “It’s exciting, it’s exciting being back in Europe after last year not being in Europe.

"For a club of this size you miss it, nights like this when everyone’s playing and you’re kind of sitting at home. So firstly we’re in it and we’re super excited by it, I think the players are as well.

“We’ve got a young group who want to create their own little legacy and hopefully it starts tonight.

“It’s just different [on challenge of European football]. The Premier League, whilst teams play differently whenever you play continental opposition, there’s always something a little bit different in my opinion, if you’re playing away from home, the conditions, the way they play, there’s always a different challenge from normal.

“I think that’s the exciting bit, it sort of allows you to explore more possibilities and it helps you evolve individually and as a team.

“Like I said for our young players particularly the guys starting tonight it’s going to be a great experience for them, a little bit of a taste of what Europe’s all about and it is different to domestic competition and I’m sure they’ll learn a great deal tonight."

Ange Postecoglou praises Tottenham Hotspur's 'relentlessness' as team avoid shock exit in EFL Cup against Coventry City

Ange Postecoglou praised the attitude of his Tottenham team and was pleased to see their “relentlessness” return as they scored two late goals to avoid an EFL Cup upset against Coventry.

The Championship side led 1-0 until Djed Spence struck an equaliser with just two minutes of normal time to play.

Brennan Johnson then finished calmly on the break to snatch a 2-1 win in added time and secure Spurs’ progress to the fourth round of the competition.

Premier League

'That makes you stronger' - Postecoglou fighting back against Spurs adversity

The win came off the back of successive defeats in the Premier League, with Postecoglou’s side only having one win to their name in the top flight so far this season.

“We had to work really, really hard just to stay in the game and obviously going a goal behind makes it even more challenging,” Postecoglou said following the match.

“At the end there we showed some real spirit and character, which is probably what's been missing in the first four games.

“We've had the performance, but we haven't had that relentlessness to get a result. You sense that in the last ten minutes, we got real belief out of that, and hopefully that's a good sign moving forward."

Aside from a 4-0 thrashing at home to Everton, it has been a largely frustrating start to the new campaign for Tottenham.

An uninspiring 1-1 draw at Leicester opened their Premier League season, while they lost to Newcastle and north London rivals Arsenal in their two outings ahead of their trip to Coventry.

“I don't think there are quick fixes or easy turnarounds in things but I thought tonight we showed a lot of what we had last year,” Postecoglou said.

“Last year we showed a lot of character and spirit to win games of football. We hung in games, got a lot of late winners and I felt the first four games (this season) the performances were probably lacking that a bit.

'We are really close' - Postecoglou happy with progress Tottenham are making

“So, the fact we did it tonight and in the manner we did, hopefully it shows the lads if we can perform at the levels we have been in the league, add that little bit of relentlessness and drive to win games, then it will certainly help us."

From the side that lost to Arsenal, Postecoglou made eight changes to his starting line-up in Coventry.

With a busy schedule ahead, which includes the start of their Europa League campaign next week, Postecoglou believes it is vital to keep a large selection of players match fit.

“What I've always done is back my decisions in critical times to always do what I feel is best, and if it doesn't work out, I can live with that.

“I'm certainly not going to jeopardise what we're trying to build here by doing something that's going make me look like I'm in a safer position. So, we're always going to play these guys because we've got Europe starting next week.

“The last thing I want to do is throw guys in out of necessity. We need to get game time and tonight, some key players for us got some good minutes that means that when we do need to make changes moving forward, they've already played and they're ready to go."

Late goals from Djed Spence and Brennan Johnson secured Tottenham an undeserved 2-1 victory at Coventry in the League Cup third-round.

It appeared Brandon Thomas Asante's second-half strike would add more misery to Spurs' start to the season when he gave the Sky Blues the lead their play warrented.

In the final ten minutes Spurs desperately looked for an equaliser and it finally came when Dejan Kulusevski's through-ball was poked home by Spence two minutes from time.

Then two minutes into injury time former Coventry man James Maddison's fine through-ball was classily clipped home by Brennan Johnson.

Ange Postecoglou reminded reporters that he always wins a trophy in his second season last week and now their fans will wonder if this late escape will be the precursor to them winning this Cup as they did, the last time they lifted silverware, in 2008.

HE WOULD HAVE BEEN OFFSIDE...

But if it wasn't...and Mason-Clark had scored...it would have been a great goal from Coventry as Rudoni crossed for Simms who nodded down for his fellow subsitute who just nudged wide from an offside position.

Talking Point - Name...on...the...trophy?

Just short of 34 years after Mark Robins' goal extended Sir Alex Ferguson's time at Old Trafford leading to the unprecedented domestic success to follow over the next two decades. Could United's hero that day at the City Ground have witnessed from the oppostion dug-out Ange Postecoglou's pivotal moment at Tottenham?

There is a fair way to go. Four ties, likely including two against teams higher than them in the Premier League, but this felt like a match with some providence attached.

Postecoglou needlessly, and probably inadvertently, put pressure on himself when he made the comment about his incredible success in his second season at clubs.

After their slow start to the Premier League, which has seen them take just four points from as many games, the team playing so poorly in the East Midlands and continuing to showcase the toothless forward play which has been evident in three of their four league games this season, would have increased the noise from those questioning the Australian supremo.

Two attacking moves with high quality, unsurprisingly both involving Maddison, turned things around for Tottenham and will have the Spurs fans pondering another Aussie's Dream.

Player of the Match - Jack Rudoni (Coventry)

All of City's forward line looked impressive as they imposed themselves on Spurs for most the of the match, but Rudoni was the impetus behind most of their attacking moves.

The £5.3 million signing from Huddersfield has the quality to play in the top flight and if he can reproduce this form consistently he may guide Coventry to these heights once more.

piece woes after defeat to Arsenal: 'It's my burden to carry'

Ange Postecoglou batted away suggestions he does not care about set pieces, and said Tottenham Hotspur's struggles defending from dead-ball situations are "my burden to carry".

Gabriel scored the only goal of the game, nodding home from a corner as Spurs fell to 1-0 defeat against north London rivals Arsenal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday.

According to the BBC, the goal was the 18th conceded by Spurs from a set piece since the beginning of the 2023/24 season - Postecoglou's first in charge of the club - but he insisted his side "work on them as much as anyone".

Premier League

Sancho 'needs love' says Maresca, as winger stars in Chelsea debut cameo

"For some reason people think I don't care about set pieces and it's a narrative that you can keep going on for ages and ages," Postecoglou told a post-match news conference.

"I understand that. Like I said, we work on them all the time. You know that they're a threat, as I said, for the most part, we handled them really well today, but we switched off for one and we paid a price. You learn from that and you move on.

"But it is what it is, it's my burden to carry, and I'm happy to do that. I've always said there's a bigger picture that's at play here that's much more important than the finer details of us getting to where we want to. For us, the way forward is to try to turn the football we're playing now into something meaningful."

Defending set pieces has proved a weak point for Spurs, with some crucial goals in the 2023/24 campaign coming from dead-ball situations, including two in the previous iteration of the north London derby at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Postecoglou's side also crashed out of last season's FA Cup to a late set-piece goal against Manchester City, while Sean Dyche's Everton capitalised on Spurs' struggles with two goals from dead-ball situations in a 2-2 draw at Goodison Park.

The former Celtic boss said "it only takes one" player to switch off from a set piece, against an Arsenal side who have profited hugely from such situations in recent years.

"We held them well for the most part and you switch off for one and you pay the price," Postecoglou continued. "They took their key moment and we didn't.

"We had held them well and they're obviously a big threat from set pieces. It only takes one. It wasn't just [Cristian] Romero, others switched off from the set piece."

Arteta hails Arsenal's 'thick skin'

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta pointed to his side's "thick skin" as they came through with a battling performance to win 1-0, despite missing some key players.

Declan Rice was forced out of the derby through suspension, while Mikel Merino, Riccardo Calafiori and Martin Odegaard were sidelined through injury alongside long-term absentee Takehiro Tomiyasu.

Arteta praised his side's ability to win "ugly" in a crucial match in Arsenal fans' calendar.

"We have people that are hard and have thick skin," Arteta said. "They love the game and we love winning. In order to win you have to do things that people call ugly. When you’re able to do that, normally you get a good gift."

The Arsenal boss continued by saying his side did not find "excuses" despite their injury-blighted squad.

"Super happy," he continued. "We know what it means to our club and our people to win a north London derby. Hopefully we made people very happy.

"We had good moments and others where we had to suffer. We had to adapt because of the players that we had available. It’s a tough week coming and instead of finding any excuses, we did the opposite."

According to Squawka, Gabriel's goal was Arsenal's 23rd from a set piece since the start of last season, and Arteta went on to praise set-piece coach Nicolas Jover for his impact on the side.

He said: "In his field, in other fields, as a person, the relationship that we have, that’s why I made the decision to bring him from City to Arsenal. Him and the staff have injected a belief."

1 Arsenal: Gabriel header settles north London derby as Gunners win on Spurs turf again

Gabriel headed a priceless winner as Arsenal moved up to second place in the Premier League table with a hard-fought 1-0 victory at Tottenham in the north London derby.

The Brazilian defender was left free to bullet home a header from Bukayo Saka’s right-wing corner on 64 minutes as Mikel Arteta’s side once again demonstrated their quality at set pieces.

It capped a resilient, organised display from The Gunners, who sat deep and threatened on the counter attack, thwarting Spurs continually and making light of the absence of key midfielders Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard.

How to watch the UEFA Europa League on TNT Sports and discovery+

Tottenham had started brightly but fit-again summer signing Dominic Solanke wasted a good early opportunity while David Raya kept out Dejan Kulusevski.

The result sees Arsenal move up to second place, two points behind leaders Manchester City. Tottenham sit 13th with just four points from their opening four top-flight games.

Next up, Spurs travel to Coventry in the League Cup on Wednesday night prior to hosting Brentford in the Premier League on Saturday.

Arsenal are at Atalanta in the UEFA Champions League on Thursday and then visit Premier League champions Manchester City in a crunch encounter next Sunday.

Talking Point - A familiar set-piece story as '1-0 to the Arsenal' is re-imagined by Mikel and Co

The last time Arsenal visited their neighbours, The Gunners came out on top thanks in no small part to some well-worked set pieces.

Well, it was deja vu for Arteta and his men as a disciplined performance ensured concern over missing key components in their midfield was ill-found.

Arsenal have now scored 23 goals from set pieces since the beginning of the 2023/24 campaign, which is the most of any team in the top flight.

It not only earns Arsenal the bragging rights but also gives them a crucial victory to keep pace with Man City at the summit ahead of a top-two clash at the Etihad next Sunday.

Indeed, this performance potentially provided a dress rehearsal and blueprint for how to cope with what they will face versus the champions next weekend.

Spurs will rue a lack of cutting edge despite the return to fitness of Solanke in attack while Guglielmo Vicario’s lack of confidence dealing with deliveries into his box remains a concern.

Player of the match - Gabriel (Arsenal)

So often, his centre-back partner William Saliba takes the headlines and plaudits, but it is the Brazilian who stands out from this game. Not only was he imperious at the back in helping to repel everything Spurs threw into the area, but he once again showed his knack for popping up with key goals as he powered home a memorable winner.
