Elisabeth Terland's two goals fired Manchester United to a 3-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at the Leigh Sports Village.

Marc Skinner's side moved up into second in the table after three games, and it was their new recruit from Brighton & Hove Albion, Terland, who set them on their way.

The Norwegian notched the first on 44 minutes with an expertly taken right-footed volley from Celin Bizet's cross that flew beyond Becky Spencer via the underside of the crossbar.

Chelsea move top of WSL as pressure mounts on Arsenal's Eidevall

Just six minutes later, she had her second of the afternoon, stealing in at the back post to nod home and double the advantage on the stroke of half-time.

Maya Le Tissier, the captain, added the third from the penalty spot a minute shy of the hour after Ella Toone's cross hit Ashleigh Neville's arm.

Robert Vilahamn's Spurs, however, have just one win from their opening four games, but they did have their chances, having 55% possession, and 18 shots in the match, six more than the hosts.

Drew Spence went close with a dipping effort from range that forced a strong save out of Phallon Tullis-Joyce, and neat work between Spence and Beth England gave Martha Thomas a chance to slot home for Spurs, but Tullis-Joyce was at the rescue for United.

England had an opportunity when Thomas seized upon possession and slotted in her team-mate, but the striker was wasteful in front of goal, and Spurs' profligacy was punished.

Hosts roar back for thrilling Premier League win as Spurs throw away two

Danny Welbeck scored the winner as Brighton came from two down to stun Tottenham and secure a rollercoaster 3-2 victory at the Amex.

Ange Postecoglou’s visitors were the better side in the first period with the in-form Brennan Johnson tucking home the opener on 23 minutes to make it six goals in his last six matches.

James Maddison doubled Spurs’ tally heading into the interval with a low shot from the edge of the area that somehow squirmed through the hands of Seagulls shot-stopper Bart Verbruggen.

Johnson continues fine run of form as Spurs seal nervy win over Ferencvaros

Brighton reduced the arrears three minutes into the second half when Yankuba Minteh seized upon an error to drill home his first goal for the club.

It was the catalyst for a surreal turnaround as Georginio Rutter levelled just shy of the hour with a show of strength and clinical finishing, before setting up Welbeck to nod the hosts in front on 66 minutes.

The result sees Brighton end a run of four Premier League matches without a victory and moves them up to sixth spot.

Tottenham’s five-match winning sequence across all competitions comes to a grinding halt with a third league loss in seven games leaving them in ninth place.

Talking Point – Tottenham capitulate as winning run ends in disappointing fashion

It wasn’t quite deja vu from the 4-2 defeat at Brighton last season, but Tottenham once again depart the Amex shaken by a turbulent, topsy-turvy affair that leaves them empty-handed.

Back in December, they were 4-0 down and managed to claw some respectability back with a late rally, but here they will feel they threw it away.

Indeed, a sixth straight win looked firmly on the cards at the interval as they oozed with confidence and swaggered into a 2-0 lead.

Quite how they ended up pointless will leave Postecoglou and his coaching staff scratching their heads - although Spurs fans have seen this sort of dramatic collapse all too often in the past.

The momentum of a five-match winning sequence following the derby defeat at home to Arsenal evaporated in 21 crazy second-half minutes and the chance to head into the international break with heads and tails firmly up is now lost, with plenty of time to dwell and conduct the post-mortem.

Player of the match - Kaoru Mitoma (Brighton)

The winger produced an exhilarating display down the left, particularly in a barnstorming second half where Spurs struggled to handle him. The 27-year-old had a hand in the first goal, set up the equaliser and was only denied a goal of his own by some desperate defending and fine goalkeeping.

Mikey Moore: Tottenham Hotspur winger labelled 'a star' after impressing in UEFA Europa League win against Ferencvaros

Description

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou praised Mikey Moore's "outstanding" performance on his first start for the club in their 2-1 UEFA Europa League win against Ferencvaros.

The 17-year-old winger played the entirety of the match in Budapest as the Spurs boss opted for an inexperienced team to take care of business.

His starting line-up included four teenagers with Lucas Bergvall, 18, Archie Gray, 18, and 19-year-old debutant Will Lankshear all also thrown in from the off.

'Don't judge us in this moment' - Ten Hag pleads for patience, says Man Utd 'will improve'

Speaking to TNT Sports after the match, Postecoglou said: "Mikey was outstanding for a 17-year-old.

"90 minutes of European football away from home, I thought he was brilliant.

"Will [was] just unlucky not to get a goal. He had a couple of moments and the shot that went just over the bar.

"I thought Archie was brilliant, played him a couple of positions today and Lucas worked hard. I think that was a huge positive for us."

'We are mad' - Ten Hag wants Man Utd to use anger as 'motivation' for Porto clash

Former Chelsea and England midfielder Joe Cole contemplated whether Moore did enough to retain his place for their Premier League clash against Brighton – should captain Son Heung-min be unavailable due to injury.

“He’s different to Son,” Cole said.

“The midfield they went with against Manchester United [in last weekend’s 3-0 win], I think you might see Sarr or [Yves] Bissouma come into that because I think Brighton are a different animal to Manchester United, but he’s certainly staked a claim.

“Ange Postecoglou would’ve looked at him in pre-season and thought he might be useful this year and every time he plays he ticks another box.

“I think you’ll see a lot more of him. I think he’s a star and I think he’s certainly in the frame for the weekend."

Brennan Johnson came off the bench to score his fifth goal in five games to secure the victory for Tottenham in a nervy end to the match.

Sarr had put Spurs ahead in the first half, before Johnson doubled their lead late on.

Barnabas Varga – who had one goal ruled out – scored for the home side to leave Postecoglou’s team clinging on in added time.

Speaking of the need to introduce first team regulars from the bench including Johnson, James Maddison and Dominic Solanke, Postecoglou said: "They need to do some work. Didn’t come here for a holiday.

"Budapest’s a beautiful city but they needed to put in a shift and I thought they did, they made an impact."

Former Tottenham striker Peter Crouch, who was watching for TNT Sports, said: “I think it’s good to be able to blood the youngsters, that’s invaluable experience for them.

“It wasn’t an A+ performance I don’t think. It could’ve been better.

“They’re away in Europe, it’s a difficult place to go. They’ve got a victory but they hung on at times."

Tottenham have now won five matches in a row in all competitions, and Postecoglou has seen a major improvement to the way his team is performing.

"There’s no denying our football’s progressing but part of that is also that resilience and relentlessness to keep getting results and winning games," he said.

"The last five games now, the boys are really doing everything they can to make sure our football is complemented by getting the rewards."

2 Tottenham Hotspur: Brennan Johnson continues fine run of form as Spurs seal nervy win in Hungary

Description

Substitute Brennan Johnson continued his recent hot-streak as a youthful Tottenham maintained their perfect start to life in the UEFA Europa League with a 2-1 victory at Ferencvaros.

Ange Postecoglou named four teenagers in his starting XI in a much-changed team from the side that thumped Manchester United in the Premier League at the weekend.

It looked like it may backfire early on as the Hungarian outfit dominated and saw a goal from Barnabas Varga chalked off for offside.

Premier League

Spurs heap more misery on Ten Hag and United at Old Trafford

Spurs took full advantage of the reprieve and Pape Matar Sarr broke the deadlock on 23 minutes when he fired in following a mix-up in the home team’s defence.

Guglielmo Vicario produced a fine fingertip stop to keep out Matheus Saldanha following the restart, while Timo Werner and 19-year-old debutant Will Lankshear went close at the other end.

Spurs eventually notched a second when Johnson rolled a low shot into the corner four minutes from time to make it five goals in his last five appearances.

Varga then set up a nervy finale with a super volley at the near post, but the visitors held on to make it two wins from two in Europe.

Tottenham will now look to maintain their current momentum when they visit Brighton in the Premier League on Sunday.

Talking Point – Postecoglou’s faith in his young guns is rewarded

After just one win from their opening four matches, there were some early grumblings in September following Tottenham’s home reversal against Arsenal.

Ange and Co have responded superbly with five wins on the spin in all competitions.

A few eyebrows were raised when Postecoglou named such a mix of youth and experience for a tricky away tie here, but his young charges responded with 17-year-old Mikey Moore the pick of the starlets on show.

It was called something of a risk by the TNT Sports experts ahead of kick off, but the Spurs boss got his reward and it means there are still plenty left in the legs of the likes of Dominic Solanke, Dejan Kulusevski, Micky van de Ven and James Maddison ahead of a tough Premier League clash at the weekend.

Player of the Match

Mikey Moore (Tottenham). The youngster has been earmarked as a star of the future for quite some time and he capped his first ever start for the club with an excellent showing. Threatened throughout with driving runs and good awareness with his flicked pass in the first half leading to the opening goal.

Glenn Hoddle says Tottenham 'got away with one' after Ferencvaros opener ruled out by VAR in UEFA Europa League clash

Description

Glenn Hoddle thought Tottenham “got away with one” after Ferencvaros had an opening goal ruled out in their UEFA Europa League clash in Budapest.

A cross from the left-hand side of the box was met at the back post by Barnabas Varga, who headed the ball down into the ground, across Spurs goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, and into the far corner of the net.

However, the goal was then the subject of a VAR check, which resulted in it being scrapped.

'I think he's a star' - Moore praised for 'outstanding' first Spurs start

Initially, it was thought Varga was onside throughout the passage of play and his team-mate Adama Traore was adjudged to have obstructed the view of Vicario from an offside position.

Awaiting the VAR decision, TNT Sports co-commentator Hoddle said: “It was a really good goal. They carved it out really well. Change of play, lovely bit of skill on the halfway line with the flick and they broke quickly.

“For me, he’s not in the view of the keeper, he’s not interfering with the keeper. He does move towards the goal.

'We are really close' - Postecoglou happy with progress Tottenham are making

“He does make a movement towards the goal. Whether he’s interfered with the keeper, I’m not so sure. It was a well taken goal, I know that, it was a really good header.”

When the decision was finalised, Hoddle made it clear that he did not agree with the outcome.

“I’ve been in football all my life and I don’t think that’s affected the goalkeeper one little bit.

“If he’s in front of him, I can understand that, but he’s right to the side. He goes to the ball, yes, he thinks about maybe knocking it in.

“For me, Tottenham have got away with one there,” he said.

However, a graphic – which was not seen by broadcasters until half-time – showed that the decision was made due to Varga's knee being marginally offside.

Even watching the replay with the VAR analysis lines marking Varga's knee, Hoddle was still unimpressed.

"That’s incredibly close. I’m not so sure. I see the lines. We were thinking it was for Traore perhaps going for the ball and putting the goalkeeper off.

"That’s so tight isn’t it," he said.

Bruno Fernandes: Manchester United captain’s red card in Tottenham defeat overturned after successful appeal

The FA has overturned the red card given to Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes in their Premier League defeat against Tottenham.

The Portuguese midfielder was sent off following a first half challenge on James Maddison.

Fernandes was dismissed with Spurs leading 1-0 and Ange Postecoglou’s side went on to win 3-0 at Old Trafford.

Premier League

Speaking after the match, Fernandes said it was "never a red card".

The sending off would have seen United’s captain suspended for three matches but, following a successful appeal, he will now be available for selection by Erik ten Hag.

A statement from the club said: “Bruno Fernandes will be available for Manchester United’s next three games following a successful claim of wrongful dismissal.

“The midfielder was sent off for serious foul play during the Premier League match against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, 29 September.

“Fernandes was set to miss our league fixtures against Aston Villa, Brentford and West Ham but will now be available for selection following the successful appeal.”

Fernandes has started every league match for United this season but is yet to score for his team, who have struggled for early season form.

Ten Hag’s side sit 13th in the Premier League table with three defeats from their opening six matches, and only two wins.

They progressed in the EFL Cup with a 7-0 win against League One side Barnsley, but made a unimpressive start to the Europa League as they drew 1-1 at home to Twente in their opening fixture.

3 Tottenham: Spurs heap more misery on Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford as Bruno Fernandes sees red

Brennan Johnson, Dejan Kulusevski and Dominic Solanke scored the goals as Tottenham Hotspur took apart a Manchester United side who also had Bruno Fernandes sent off.

After reportedly narrowly escaping the sack in the summer, Erik ten Hag may well be fearing for his job after a weak performance.

From the off, Spurs were first to every ball, and it was no surprise when they took the lead on three minutes, Johnson tapping home at the far post after fantastic work from Micky van de Ven.

Johnson and Solanke on target as 10-man Spurs ease past wasteful Qarabag

Though Spurs didn't score again in the first half, they absolutely dominated as United shrunk. Then, with three minutes until the break, Fernandes slipped as James Maddison passed him, lunged, and was sent off after his challenge landed higher than intended.

Handed an opportunity to reorganise, Ten Hag will have been dismayed to concede within two minutes of the restart, Kulusevski finishing cleverly after more good work from Johnson.

Then, just as United established a foothold in the game, Spurs made it safe, Solanke sliding in after Pape Sarr flicked on a corner.

In the time remaining, the away end mocked the home fans, team and manager - a state of affairs that sees Ten Hag under yet more pressure.

Player of the match

Micky van de Ven seized the game with a fantastic gambolling run and didn't allow United a sniff of goal.

0 Qarabag: Brennan Johnson and Dominic Solanke on target as 10

Submitted by daniel on

Description

Brennan Johnson, Pape Sarr and Dominic Solanke were all on target as 10-man Tottenham got their UEFA Europa League campaign underway with a 3-0 win over Qarabag.

The hosts endured a series of twists early in the evening as a 35-minute delay to kick off due to severe travel disruption was followed by a straight red card for Radu Dragusin on eight minutes.

It didn’t seem to faze The Lilywhites as they stole in front just four minutes later when Johnson slotted home his third goal in his last three outings after good work from Solanke.

League Cup

Spence and Johnson spare Spurs blushes with late show to progress at Coventry

Ange Postecoglou’s men made it two just seven minutes into the second half when Sarr volleyed home following a right-wing corner.

However, Qarabag remained a major threat, with Juninho hitting the post and Toral Bayramov striking the crossbar with a missed penalty.

The Azerbaijani minnows somehow failed to register on the scoresheet and Solanke made sure of the points 22 minutes from time with a simple tap-in.

The only sour note on a positive night for Spurs was the withdrawal of captain Son Heung-Min ahead of Sunday’s Premier League visit to Manchester United.

Talking Point – Tottenham survive delay and red card to begin trophy bid in positive fashion

It’s fair to say this was a rather eventful evening that marked Spurs’ return to European football following a one-year absence.

The uncertainty over kick off, the lapse by Dragusin and then the impressive showing from the 10-men made for a rollercoaster affair, with Qarabag having their moments along the way too.

Given the twists and turns, Postecoglou will be delighted to have come through a night of potential banana skins on a positive note.

Tottenham are regarded as one of the favourites and strongest sides in the competition, with many a supporter earmarking this as a trophy that could end their long draught.

Postecoglou has claimed he always wins silverware in his second season, so could this be the year for The Lilywhites as they bid to land a trophy they also won in 1972 and 1984?

There’s a long road ahead and quite probably less bizarre evenings to navigate, but this was a solid start given the circumstances.

Player of the match

Dominic Solanke (Tottenham). The striker worked tirelessly, holding the ball up well and chipping in with a goal and an assist. Saw his start to life with Spurs hindered by injury but is beginning to show his worth in a white shirt now.
