The match officials have been confirmed for Newcastle United’s Premier League match at Bournemouth on Sunday afternoon (2pm kick-off).

David Coote will referee will referee the match at the Vitality Stadium. It will be Coote’s first match refereeing Newcastle since the 6-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur at St James’ Park in April 2023.

Coote also refereed Newcastle’s 2-0 defeat to Manchester United in the Carabao Cup final a couple of months earlier. At Bournemouth, he will be assisted by Lee Betts and Craig Taylor with Simon Hooper as fourth official.

Tim Robinson will be on VAR, assisted by Neil Davies. Newcastle have already been on the receiving end of a controversial refereeing decision after just one match this season after Craig Pawson decided to show Fabian Schar a straight red card for violent conduct against Ben Brereton Diaz in Newcastle’s 1-0 win over Southampton last weekend.

Brereton Diaz pushed Schar to the ground before going head-to-head with the Swiss defender and promptly throwing himself to the ground once contact had been made. Pawson made the decision to show Schar a red card which was not overturned by VAR.

Following the win, Newcastle analysed the footage and decided to appeal the red card but the decision was upheld. As a result, Schar will serve a three-match suspension - starting against Bournemouth this weekend.

The 32-year-old will also miss the midweek trip to Nottingham Forest in the Carabao Cup as well as next weekend’s match against Tottenham Hotspur at St James’ Park. He will be eligible to return to action at Wolverhampton Wanderers on September 15 (4:30pm kick-off).

Eddie Howe has confirmed that Fabian Schar will not feature against Bournemouth on Sunday.

Schar was sent off during the first-half of Saturday’s win over Southampton following an off-the-ball incident with Ben Brereton Diaz. Schar was adjudged to have headbutted the Chilean international and was dismissed by Craig Pawson for violent conduct - an action that carries a three-game suspension.

Schar reacted to a shove in the back from Brereton Diaz by first pushing his opponent, before then squaring up to him. The Saints man then fell dramatically to the floor after going face-to-face with Schar - leading to a red card being shown by Pawson.

Eddie Howe revealed last week that the club would appeal Schar’s dismissal with the aim of having his suspension reduced. He told the Gazette: “We'll analyse the sending off and everything attached to that. I haven't seen it back but once we have we'll see what we do.

“I thought it was soft, that was my initial impression. It feels like Fabby has been caught by a well-managed situation. But before I criticise any players involved I’ll have to see it again.”

However, that appeal has subsequently failed, meaning that Schar will miss the trip to the Vitality Stadium, their Carabao Cup game against Nottingham Forest as well as their clash with Tottenham Hotspur at St James’ Park next weekend.

The timing of the red card means Schar won’t feature for the Magpies again until after the September international break. Newcastle United are awaiting reasons from the FA as to why their appeal was not successful.

Eddie Howe has been handed a very early blow after Fabian Schar was sent off just 30 minutes into Newcastle United’s clash with Southampton.

Newcastle United’s Premier League opener against Southampton was overshadowed by a controversial red card to Schar just 30 minutes into the game. The Switzerland international was dismissed by Craig Pawson after a coming together between himself and Ben Brereton-Diaz after the Chilean had barged his opposite number in the back off the ball.

Following that incident, Schar reacted by standing up to Brereton-Diaz but Pawson adjudged he had headbutted the Saints man and reached for the red card. VAR checked the incident but agreed with the referee’s initial decision and Schar was shown to the tunnel.

Howe reacted to that dismissal by taking off Jacob Murphy and replacing him with Emil Krafth as they shifted from a 4-3-3 formation to a 4-3-2 system. As expected, the St James’ Park crowd spent the rest of the first-half booing every single Brereton-Diaz touch.

A red card for violent conduct does mean that Schar will be suspended for Newcastle United’s next three games. Those will come against Bournemouth in the league next Sunday, their Carabao Cup meeting against Nottingham Forest and then against Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League on 1 September.

Newcastle United have finally confirmed Sandro Tonali’s official return date from his 10-month betting ban - though uncertainty remains.

Newcastle have received confirmation from Federazione Italiana Giuoco Calcio (FIGC) that Tonali’s ban runs up to and including August 27, allowing him to return to action from August 28.

But when Tonali will return is not quite clear just yet as Newcastle have a Carabao Cup second round match at Nottingham Forest that week which could be scheduled for either Tuesday or Wednesday evening. Tonali would be ineligible to feature should the game be played on Tuesday but would be allowed if scheduled for Wednesday.

The fixture is likely to be played on Wednesday due to Newcastle playing away at Bournemouth on the Sunday beforehand.

Tonali’s first Premier League match back will be Tottenham Hotspur at St James’ Park on September 1.

A club statement confirmed: “Newcastle United can announce that Sandro Tonali will return to selection on Wednesday, August 28, 2024 following the conclusion of his ten-month ban from competitive football.

“The club has received formal confirmation from the Federazione Italiana Giuoco Calcio (FIGC) that the player’s sporting sanction will run up to and including Tuesday, August 27.

“The Magpies will travel to Nottingham Forest in the Carabao Cup second round during the week commencing Monday, August 26 (fixture date and time TBC), before hosting Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League at St. James’ Park on Sunday, September 1 (kick-off 1:30pm BST).”

This comes after there was confusion over Tonali’s exact return date. An initial statement published by the club last year listed Tonali’s return date as August 27, 2024 which would have allowed him to play in the Carabao Cup second-round matches.

But an official document published by the Football Association earlier this year listed Tonali’s return date as August 29 rather than August 27. The club later confirmed they would be adhering to the August 29 return date unless told otherwise.

Now, they have received official confirmation that Tonali’s return date is actually August 28.

Sandro Tonali is just over a fortnight away from returning for Newcastle United.

The Italian midfielder is serving the final weeks of his 10-month betting ban which officially expires at the end of this month. Newcastle’s first league game after Tonali’s ban is lifted will be against Tottenham Hotspur on September 1, after the summer transfer window has closed.

And Newcastle chief executive officer Darren Eales believes Tonali will ‘genuinely be like a new signing’ for the club after being limited to just 12 appearances following his £52million arrival from AC Milan last summer.

While serving his ban, Tonali has continued to train at Newcastle and even addressed supporters in English during an exclusive fan event in Tokyo earlier this month.

Reflecting on Tonali’s surprise appearance in Japan, Eales said: “It was great, wasn’t it? “I don’t think anyone in the room knew that the players were coming.

“Sandro’s English is really good, and I thought he just spoke from the heart. For me, you got a sense of what Sandro Tonali is as a player. I think he accepts that last year doesn’t almost count, that season, because of what happened.

“I think you can see just by the way he carries himself that he’s really focused for this season, and it’s a way for him to kick start his Newcastle United career.

“We know he’s a fantastic player. He works his socks off in training, which is difficult when you’re not playing games. He’s done that. He starting to see that August 28 is fast approaching.

“It is a cliche, but he is going to be genuinely like a new signing, because this is his chance to launch his Newcastle United career. It’s exciting for him.”

Tonali hasn’t been able to feature for Newcastle in pre-season but is understood to have been involved in 11 v 11 training ground matches, including one against Burnley last month. He will miss Saturday’s Premier League opener against Southampton at St James’ Park and the trip to AFC Bournemouth the following weekend before finally returning against Spurs.

Discussing Tonali’s return, Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe said: “He’s good. Mentally, I think he’s been excellent during this long period. I think he’s trained really well.

“He’s very low maintenance for someone like me to manage the situation. I think he’s been first class. He’s been really supportive to the players that have been playing, and making sure that the team’s in the right place, ahead of himself.

“I expect, with the way he’s trained, for him to get up to speed quite quickly, but I do think there needs to be a certain amount of understanding that there’s just been no way for us to get him the games that he needs into his legs.

“Although he’s joined in every day, a lot of his training would be smaller than a match unless it’s an 11 v 11, which we would occasionally do in training. I think it probably will take him a while to get to his very best levels, but he looks fit and very focused. He’s a big player for us.”

The latest transfer talk from across the Premier League as Tottenham Hotspur and Southampton plan moves ahead of the new season.

Tottenham Hotspur have been tipped to ‘accelerate’ their bid to land Wolverhampton Wanderers winger Pedro Neto.

The Portugal international is reportedly on the radar of a number of Premier League clubs despite revealing his desire to help Gary O’Neil’s side move to ‘another level’ in the future. Neto joined Wolves from Lazio in a £14m deal during the summer of 2019 and has scored 14 goals and provided 24 assists in 135 appearances during that time. The versatile forward has been linked with moves to the likes of Liverpool and Arsenal in recent seasons and was believed to be one option under consideration by Newcastle as they look to add a wide player to Eddie Howe’s squad over the remainder of the summer transfer window.

Speculation over Neto’s future was the topic of conversation last week as Wolves boss O’Neil said: “I know how good he is, and I know how well he would do at a big club. Obviously I want our team here to be unbelievably successful. So I’m hoping that he stays. I think so (there’s a chance he stays). There’s nothing going on at this moment from anybody. He’s in a good spot, I’ve spoken to him about how we’re going to play and how it suits him and what a big part he’ll play in it. But of course, we’re all grown-ups while you’re having them conversations. If a massive bid comes from a top club then no one is going to stand in Pedro’s way.”

Transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano has described Neto a ‘really appreciated and very highly rated’ by Spurs and believes the North London club will move forwards for the Wolves star and kickstart a hectic period of recruitment ahead of the new Premier League season.

Romano said on a Playback Livestream, he said: “Pedro Neto remains a player really appreciated and very highly rated by Tottenham. So, for sure, he is one of the players they’ve always had on the list. Let’s see if they will decide to accelerate, but I expect Tottenham to be busy starting from next week.”

Liverpool set demands for Southampton target

Liverpool have rejected a offer for Fabio Carvalho from Premier League rivals Southampton - and have reportedly set their stance over the young forward’s future.

The 21-year-old has impressed for the Reds during their recent tour of the United States as Arne Slot’s side claimed wins against Manchester United, Arsenal and Real Betis and found the net against both Premier League clubs. His performances have caught the eye of the new Liverpool head coach, who is said to be against selling Carvalho and could hand the former Fulham academy product a chance to impress during the opening weeks of the Premier League season. That would be a boost for Carvalho after he struggled to game regular game-time under former manager Jurgen Klopp and was sent out on loan to the likes of Bundesliga club RB Leipzig and Championship side Hull City over the last year.

Newly-promoted Southampton made an approach to sign Carvalho on a permanent deal over the weekend but were unsuccessful with their opening offer of around £15m and it remains to be seen whether they return with an improved bid. CaughtOffside have now claimed Liverpool have informed their Premier League rivals and any other suitors it would take an offer above £25m before they will consider the sale of the Portugal Under-21 international.

Newcastle are apparently interested in a move for Fiorentia attacker Nicolas Gonzalez, as per a report by TuttoJuve. Juventus, Atalanta and Atletico Madrid are also believed to be keen. In addition, Olé in Argentina claim Nottingham Forest and Brighton and Hove Albion are also potential suitors.

Speaking to TNT Sports in May, pundit Don Hutchinson praised the player: "Nicolas Gonzalez is a player that can go on to unbelievably high levels. If Bernardo Silva was ever to knock on Pep Guardiola's door and say it is time for him to move on, I think City should be seriously looking at Gonzalez. He will be huge.

"We just looked at some of the numbers there in terms of their goals in the Conference League, their top the possession charts, that's their style. He is very similar to [Bernardo] Silva. Silva has more consistency in his game, but when you look at talent, he compares. He [Gonzalez] plays off the right-hand side, he is a left-footed player, he is very good in the air."

Gonzalez, who is 26-years-old, is an Argentina international with 26 caps under his belt for his country so far. He started his career at Argentinos Juniors before moving over to Europe in 2018.

Stuttgart snapped him up and he scored 23 goals in 79 games for the German outfit. Fiorentina subsequently lured him to Italy and he has since found the net on 38 occasions in 125 outings.

Winger latest

Tottenham Hotspur have ‘intestified’ their pursuit of Wolves winger Pedro Neto, who has been linked with Newcastle, as per FootballTransfers. He is facing an uncertain long-term future in the Midlands and could move on for a new challenge.

His boss Gary O’Neil has recently shared this update regarding the club’s stance on him, suggesting they won’t stand in his way: “I know how good he is, and I know how well he would do at a big club. Obviously I want our team here to be unbelievably successful. So I’m hoping that he stays.

“I think so (there’s a chance he stays). There’s nothing going on at this moment from anybody. But of course, we’re all grown-ups while you’re having them conversations. If a massive bid comes from a top club then no one is going to stand in Pedro’s way.

“I’m confident that he will be here. Because we haven’t had anything really, that makes the club think that he won’t be. But of course, a lot of business can be done late.”

Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur have potentially been handed a big boost in their hopes of signing Wolves’ Pedro Neto this summer.

Gary O’Neil has revealed Wolves will not stand in Pedro Neto’s way if a ‘massive bid’ is submitted for the Portuguese international this summer. Neto has impressed greatly during his time at Molineux, although injury issues mean he has made just 41 Premier League appearances over the last three seasons.

The 24-year-old has been linked with a move away from Wolves with Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur among the clubs credited with an interest. A fee of around £60m has been reported to be enough to tempt Wolves into selling this summer, although no official bids have yet been received for Neto.

Speaking about the winger, and the reported transfer interest in him, O’Neil has revealed he is ‘hoping’ Neto remains at the club once the summer transfer window has closed on Friday 30 August, but has admitted that a ‘massive bid’ could tempt Wolves into selling the Portuguese international.

O’Neil told the Express and Star: “I know how good he is and how well he would do at a big club, but I want our team here to be unbelievably successful and I’m hoping he stays.

“There’s nothing going on at this moment from anybody, he’s in a good spot and I’ve spoken to him about how we’re going to play, how it suits him and the big part he’ll play in it. But of course, it can change really quickly if a massive bid comes in from a top club, then no-one will stand in Pedro’s way.

“It’s still my duty to him and everybody to make sure he’s ready to play for us. I’m confident that he will be here because we haven’t had anything that makes the club think he won’t be.

“But a lot of the business can be done late, even up to the last couple of hours, so until the window is closed there’s always a chance.”

Wolves have already lost their captain Maximilian Kilman this summer after he moved to West Ham to reunite with Julen Lopetegui. The Magpies will face O’Neil’s side in their fourth league game of the season on Sunday 15 September (4:30pm kick-off).

Amanda Staveley has not ruled-out buying a stake in another Premier League club following her departure from Newcastle United.

It was announced earlier this month that Staveley and her husband Mehrdad Ghodoussi would leave their roles at Newcastle United. The pair helped bring together the takeover of the club back in October 2021 with Staveley having tried on three separate occasions in the four years previous to that to end Mike Ashley’s time as owner of the club.

Following her departure from Newcastle United, it was reported by Bloomberg that PCP Capital Partners could look to make future investments in the sport and that ‘initial discussions’ over buying a minority stake in Tottenham Hotspur had taken place.

Speaking to The Athletic, Staveley refused to comment directly on those reports, but did leave the door open to potential future investment opportunities in the sport: “Not much, I’m afraid.” Staveley said about Spurs.

“My preference would have been to stay with Newcastle, but life doesn’t always work out exactly how you want it to. Nothing is going to replicate that. I fell in love with Newcastle, the club and the people and that can’t change, but I didn’t want to get in Newcastle’s way. It’s got to be about what’s best for Newcastle.

“Mehrdad and I are keen to be hands-on. We’re hard-working people, I love to be very busy and to engage and I love football. Very sadly, we have to move on to other projects and that might involve us taking a stake in another club or buying another club and that’s difficult. But it’s possible.

“I don’t know what my future holds, but you can never move on from the love I have for Newcastle and I would love to come back for matches. I’m a Geordie now. I’m a Yorkshire Geordie, but I will always have that chemistry and that love.”
