Tottenham Hotspur won't be looking ahead to next season just yet, with their Europa League campaign set to determine the majority of their transfer business and even managerial strategy - and that is set to have an impact on the permanent signing of loan star Mathys Tel, Fabrizio Romano has revealed on GIVEMESPORT's 'Market Madness' podcast.
Tel joined Spurs in an eleventh-hour move from Bayern Munich on the January transfer window's deadline day, with a loan-to-buy option being inserted as a clause into his temporary switch. He's beginning to marginally impress more in north London after a slow start to life in the capital, and manager Ange Postecoglou earlier hinted that the French star could be set to stay beyond the current campaign.
Romano: Tel Has 'Important Say' on Tottenham Future
Spurs are happy with his development but results may have an impact
However, Spurs are having a horror season on domestic soil, which could impact on Tel's future. They lost an eighth home game of the Premier League season on Monday, marking a record number of home losses for the club in a single campaign since the competition started in 1992, and that has left the club hovering over 17th place in the division, which would comfortably be their worst-ever finish in the league - leading to Postecoglou potentially being sacked.
But if Spurs can progress to the Europa League final and win the competition, it would bizarrely ensure Champions League football next season - and whilst Romano has admitted that the club are happy with Tel, it may come down to his own decision if they can't secure European football next season. Romano told GIVEMESPORT's 'Market Madness' podcast:
"They are very happy with Mathys Tel, in terms of attitude, in terms of qualities, in terms of potential.
"So let's see if they will try to renegotiate terms with Bayern Munich at the end of the season. Let's see also what the player wants to do, because I think this is not only on Spurs, but it's also on the player. The player has an important say on what he wants to do for his future.
"And obvious, for the player, it's important to understand - is Postecoglou staying or not? Who could be the new coach? Was the project Champions League football or not?
"Also, Tottenham are in the semi-final of the Europa League, so there are several points to clarify.
"I think it's going to take some time before all of them make a decision on this. But I can confirm to you that Tottenham are quite happy with the player, and are also convinced that he has huge potential, as they were when they decided to sign him."
Tottenham Could be Tel's Home For Years to Come
The Lilywhites would do well to land the Frenchman on a permanent
Tel was utilised sparingly by Bayern boss Vincent Kompany in the first half of the campaign, and his time at the Allianz Arena slowly ground to a halt under the Belgian, which ultimately forced his hand on a move to Tottenham to feature under Postecoglou.
GIVEMESPORT Key Statistic: Mathys Tel has three goals in 13 games for Tottenham.
But if Spurs can qualify for the Champions League, that pull of elite European football could tempt the Frenchman to stay and strut his stuff in the top-flight for the foreseeable future.
