QPR star and Tottenham Hotspur loanee Yang Min-hyeok has been handed a boost in the hopes of making his senior debut for the South Korea national team next week.
The teenager is spending the back end of the campaign on loan at Loftus Road and is tipped to have a bright future ahead of him. The 18-year-old has represented the South Korea under-17 side but never the senior team, despite two call-ups.
Yang was an unused substitute as Hong Myung-bo’s side drew 1-1 with Oman on Thursday. PSG midfielder Lee Kang-in was taken off injured in that match, which makes the chance of Yang being given a debut against Jordan likely.
PSG star suffers South Korea injury
Kang-in was seen on crutches after the match and looks unlikely to feature again for the nation during the international break. Reacting to the injury, South Korea and Tottenham Hotspur captain Son said: "As a teammate and a friend, it’s heartbreaking to see players get injured. I don’t know how serious their injuries are, but I really hope they aren’t severe."
That could open up the chance for Yang, who has made eight appearances in the Championship for Marti Cifuentes’ QPR side since arriving on loan. The R’s beat competition to bring the winger in on loan in January with the player only having arrived at the Premier League side in December. Spurs struck a K-League record £3.3 million agreement with Gangwon FC last summer but the rising star stayed on in his home country of South Korea to complete the K-League season.
Yang won the Young Player of the Year award in the K-League in 2024, helping a formerly relegation-threatened Gangwon to a historical second-place finish with 12 goals. Speaking about the hype around the rising star, South Korean football expert Joel Kim told LondonWorld: “We want him to be the best he can be and to take Korean football to another level, he’s the youngest player to have been recruited by a Premier League club.
QPR teenager tipped to ‘break records’
“He’s going to break those records being so young and already making an impact. We are hoping that Son Heung-Min’s ceiling will be Yang’s floor, if he can take Korean football to another level. We’re seeing some promising signs of that for sure, especially with his adjustment to the Championship. We have hopes but it’s too soon to say he’ll be the next Son Heung-min or the next legend. Only time will tell.”
Having signed for Tottenham Hotspur and playing on the flank, it’s impossible not to draw comparisons between the QPR loanee and Spurs legend Son Heung-min. Indeed, after the player arrived in North London, Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou immediately pointed to the role that Son would play in the new arrival’s development.
Postecoglou said: "He is still very young and has come in from the other side of the world where the level of competition is nowhere near what he is going to face here.
"We will just give him time to adapt. It helps that Sonny is here and kind of helps him around when he is at the club and outside the club. We are just trying to get him settled early and give him the chance to settle in. No real plan, we will just take it as it goes with him and see how he settles in."
In other news, a QPR youngster has opened up on his ‘surreal’ professional contract after transfer links with Spurs and Chelsea.
