Tottenham Hotspur are one of the most profitable clubs in world football, with one of the strongest squads in the Premier League, but how much are their players worth?

Ange Postecoglou has spent a fair amount of money since he arrived at Tottenham just over a year ago, and has now assembled an exciting, talented, and young squad.

Many fringe players have now moved on this summer, but a couple of outcasts still remain, for now. Still, here we take a look at the market value for every player in the Lilywhites squad (data via Transfermarkt).

Goalkeepers

Guglielmo Vicario: £29.5m

Fraser Forster: £1.01m

Brandon Austin: £506,000

Alfie Whiteman: £422,257

It is worth noting, Spurs paid roughly £17.2m for Guglielmo Vicario a year ago (Sky Sports). The Italian stopper, therefore, has almost doubled in value since arriving in the Premier League.

Defenders

Pedro Porro: £38m

Djed Spence: £6.7m

Cristian Romero: £54.9m

Micky van de Ven: £46.4m

Radu Dragusin: £21.1m

Ben Davies: £8.4m

Destiny Udogie: £38m

Sergio Reguilon: £10.1m

According to Paul O’Keefe on an episode of The Last Word on Spurs, the club cited a price tag of £150m for Cristian Romero, in an effort to deter interest from Real Madrid. That’s almost three times the value placed on the defender by Transfermarkt data.

Midfielders

Yves Bissouma: £29.5m

Pape Matar Sarr: £38m

Rodrigo Bentancur: £29.5m

Archie Gray: £15.2m

Lucas Bergvall: £8.4m

James Maddison: £59.1m

Giovani Lo Celso: £13.5m

Alfie Devine: £1.8m

Spurs paid roughly £30m for Archie Gray when he joined from Leeds United this summer (BBC). According to this data, they overpaid by doubling what the youngster is apparently worth.

Attackers

Dejan Kulusevski: £46.4m

Brennan Johnson: £40.5m

Heung-min Son: £38m

Timo Werner: £14.3m

Wilson Odobert: £8.4m

Mikey Moore: N/A

Richarlison: £32m

Dominic Solanke: £33.8m

Will Lankshear: N/A

A look at Tottenham's squad registration dilemma ahead of the transfer deadline

Description

The transfer window closes on Friday, and Tottenham have altered their squad fairly well already this summer. But, ahead of the squad registration deadlines, there may still be work to be done to comply with the rules.

Premier League is not an issue

This summer has seen an incredible exodus at the club, with a slew of fringe players leaving the club. It has been the rebuild and clearout that fans have been crying out for, and it leaves the squad in a good place.

So too do the signings of Dominic Solanke, Wilson Odobert, and Archie Gray. With better strength in depth and less deadwood in the squad, Ange Postecoglou is seemingly happy with his roster right now.

There are still two players to move on, though. Giovani Lo Celso and Sergio Reguilon are not thought to have a future at the club, and letting them leave would make things even simpler from a squad registration point of view.

The good news is, the Premier League rules are very simple, and Tottenham will have no trouble complying with them. Clubs can register up to 25 players, with a maximum of 17 non-homegrown players.

Players under the age of 21 do not need to be registered, so the likes of Lucas Bergvall, Archie Gray, Mikey Moore, and Will Lankshear are free hits.

MORE SPURS STORIES

The squad already has space for one more foreign player, and if Lo Celso and Reguilon do move on as planned, Spurs would technically be able to register up to three more non-homegrown players.

Europa League causes complications

However, Postecoglou will need to do a fair bit of juggling when it comes to sorting out his Europa League squad.

As things stand, due to Bergvall having to be registered among the foreign player spots, Spurs have got the maximum 17 there. Removing Lo Celso and Reguilon from that equation would make things a little easier, but that wouldn’t solve the bigger issue.

The club has seven association-trained players (Fraser Forster, Brandon Austin, Alfie Whiteman, Djed Spence, Ben Davies, Brennan Johnson, Dominic Solanke) and only four spots available.

Anyone not included in those four spots would have to be registered in the non-homegrown list, which, as we already said, is looking pretty tight.

If the club cannot fulfil these rules, they will need to reduce the squad accordingly, meaning a 24-man squad is a very possible outcome for Spurs in the Europa League.

This will all get even more complicated if the club were to sign anyone else before the transfer window shuts. If it’s a foreign player, someone will miss out on the non-homegrown list. If it’s a homegrown player, it will push another association-trained player into the foreign list.

One solution could be to sign a former player, like Marcus Edwards or Kyle Walker-Peters. Another could be to register an academy player in the squad, but that would be a bit of a waste as they can already be included in the B-squad without impacting the main squad.

Essentially, Tottenham may need to move on more players this month, or disappoint one or two players by not including them in the Europa League squad.

Two Tottenham players named in the European Team of the Week

Description

It was a good weekend for Tottenham Hotspur, as the Lilywhites triumphed over the Toffees in their first home game of the season. The performance was so good, in fact, that two of the Spurs players made it into WhoScored’s team of the week.

Clinical Spurs destroy Everton

Spurs registered their first win of the season with a 4-0 victory over struggling Everton at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Ange Postecoglou’s side put in a dominant display, but while they rued missed chances against Leicester City, Tottenham were clinical in putting Everton to the sword and bagging all three points.

Yves Bissouma opened the scoring with a wonderful long-range effort, before Heung-min Son doubled the lead with a cheeky finish after stealing the ball off Jordan Pickford.

In the second half, a Cristian Romero header killed the game and capped his 100th appearance for Spurs in style. Then, Son added his second and Tottenham’s fourth to complete the rout after some fine work by Micky van de Ven.

MORE SPURS STORIES

Romero and Sonny shine

Pretty much every Spurs player put in a great performance on Saturday, but two have been picked out by WhoScored in their Team of the Week across Europe’s top five leagues (England, Spain, Italy, France, Germany).

Romero was selected as part of a back three, with a huge rating of 9.04, thanks to a goal and a clean sheet, and a general solid display.

Meanwhile, Son was put up front with Erling Haaland, with a rating of 9.05, largely thanks to his brace.

Spurs Web Opinion

I thought these two were quality on Saturday, and took their goals really well.

I’m quite surprised Micky van de Ven isn’t in there, too, though, as he was my man of the match against Everton, to be honest. Yves Bissouma was great, too, but I appreciate the midfield there is pretty stacked.

Description

Tottenham Hotspur cannot be drawn against Arsenal or any of the other teams competing in the Champions League or Europa League in the third round of the Carabao Cup, The Standard have revealed.

New rules in the Carabao Cup

The move comes as a result of the new format of the Champions League and the Europa League this season, which will see all the teams play two extra group-stage matches.

Arsenal, Aston Villa, Liverpool, and Manchester City are due in Champions League action the week beginning September 16 while Manchester United and Spurs will begin their Europa League campaigns the following week.

Due to the expansion of these competitions, the FA have decided to keep these sides apart in the next round of the Carabao Cup to ensure there is no clash of fixture dates.

When is the Carabao Cup third-round draw?

Tottenham will learn their opponents in the third round later this evening, with the draw set to take place at the City Ground.

MORE SPURS STORIES

Spurs last won the League Cup back in 2008, which also happens to be their last trophy of any kind.

They made the final in 2021 under Ryan Mason after Jose Mourinho was sacked six days before a defeat to Manchester City at Wembley.

Spurs Web Opinion

This is good news for Tottenham, who will have to take the Carabao Cup seriously this season as the competition represents the club’s best chance of ending their trophy drought.

After being knocked out in the early stages by Fulham last season, one would expect Ange Postecoglou to field quite a strong team.

Description

Tottenham Hotspur are competing in four competitions this season, and the Carabao Cup represents a solid chance of some silverware for the Lilywhites. Here are all the details regarding the third-round draw.

The League Cup is the last trophy Spurs won, over 16 years ago now in 2008. They went close again in 2021, but failed to defeat Manchester City in the final.

After crashing out on penalties to Fulham last season, Ange Postecoglou will be keen to go a lot further this year.

When’s the Carabao Cup third-round draw?

The draw takes place on Wednesday, August 28, 2024.

It will be drawn after the second round ties on the night, and will be held at Nottingham Forest’s City Ground. The stadium is hosting a game between Forest and Newcastle that night.

What teams are in it?

MORE SPURS STORIES

Those seven Premier League sides qualify for the third round automatically thanks to their involvement in the Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League.

They will be joined by the winners of the following ties:

AFC Wimbledon vs Ipswich Town

Barnsley vs Sheffield United

Barrow vs Derby County

Birmingham City vs Fulham

Blackburn Rovers vs Blackpool

Brighton vs Crawley Town

Cardiff City vs Southampton

Colchester United vs Brentford

Coventry City vs Oxford United

Crystal Palace vs Norwich City

Everton vs Doncaster Rovers

Fleetwood Town vs Rotherham United

Grimsby Town vs Sheffield Wednesday

Harrogate Town vs Preston North End

Leicester City vs Tranmere Rovers

Middlesbrough vs Stoke City

Millwall vs Leyton Orient

Nottingham Forest vs Newcastle United

QPR vs Luton Town

Shrewsbury Town vs Bolton Wanderers

Swansea City vs Wycombe Wanderers

Walsall vs Huddersfield Town

Watford vs Plymouth Argyle

West Ham vs Bournemouth

Wolves vs Burnley

When are the games?

In another change to the competition, third-round ties will be played on the Tuesday and Wednesday of the weeks commencing September 16 and September 23.

Spreading these games across a fortnight again helps ease fixture congestion. So, Tottenham could play on September 17/18 or September 24/25.

When, where, and how to watch Newcastle vs Tottenham in the Premier League

Tottenham Hotspur bagged their first win of the season against Everton last weekend, but now they face a far sterner test with a clash against Newcastle United. Here’s how to watch the game and which players are available.

After a disappointing 1-1 draw in the opening game of the season against newly-promoted Leicester City, Spurs needed to step it up in front of their own fans at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and they duly delivered.

A 4-0 demolition of Everton, with goals from Yves Bissouma, Cristian Romero, and a brace from skipper Heung-min Son appears to have calmed the fanbase somewhat. But, a more difficult challenge awaits.

When and where is the game?

Tottenham’s next game will be played at St. James’ Park on Sunday 1st September, 2024. The match is scheduled for a 1:30 pm kick-off.

How to watch Newcastle vs Spurs

The game will be available to watch live on Sky Sports Premier League or Main Event for customers who have the Sky Sports package.

Coverage will start at 12:30 pm, with pre-match discussion and news. Be warned, there will be reduced post-match analysis as Manchester United take on Liverpool at 4:00 pm and the Sky Sports team will move on to talk about that game.

MORE SPURS STORIES

Team news

Spurs will be sweating on the fitness of Dominic Solanke ahead of the game, with the big-money signing potentially still out with an ankle injury.

Ange Postecoglou confirmed the injury was not serious, but couldn’t offer much in the way of an accurate return date. All we know is, Solanke will almost definitely be back for the North London derby on September 15, but he may well be unavailable for the Newcastle game.

The good news is Rodrigo Bentancur will be available again after recovering from his concussion. Destiny Udogie, who was substituted in the second half against Everton with some soreness and fatigue, should be cleared to play, too.

For Newcastle United, Fabian Schar will still be suspended after his red card against Southampton. Lewis Miley is out injured until October, while defenders Jamaal Lascelles and Sven Botman are unavailable until the New Year.

Journalist says Spurs may make key Cristian Romero decision in the coming months

Submitted by daniel on

Description

Sky Sports reporter Michael Bridge has hinted that Tottenham Hotspur could decide to offer Cristian Romero a new contract before the end of the season.

Tottenham vice-captain Cristian Romero

Romero is not only one of Tottenham’s most important players but he has also become one of the leaders of the Spurs side over the last year.

The 26-year-old is the older head at the back who has the responsibility of marshalling a young Spurs backline and he has undoubtedly matured as a player over the last 12 months, managing to cut out the moments of brashness he was previously prone to.

The central defender’s profile has blossomed thanks to the success he has enjoyed with Argentina over recent years, with the defender playing a key role in the nation’s World Cup win in 2022 as well as their back-to-back Copa America titles.

That has understandably brought interest from some of the big-hitters around Europe, with reports revealing earlier this summer that Real Madrid were keen on securing the Tottenham man (The Standard).

MORE SPURS STORIES

Spurs could sit down with Romero this season

The former Atalanta star has three years left on his contract in North London and Bridge believes that a new deal could be on the offing for the defender.

When asked if Romero could sign a new contract, the journalist told Last Word on Spurs: “It wouldn’t surprise me, Spurs during the season are going to sit down and speak to Cristian Romero. He’s he’s an immense defender.

“I don’t think he, in terms of cards, he’s not as erratic as he used to be before Postecoglou. I would like to see him be more of a leader sometimes. Romero, who knows he’s a he’s an immense defender, he’s bound to get some interest as the months drag on.”

Spurs Web Opinion

There is no doubt that Tottenham will try to initiate contact with Romero’s representatives regarding a new contract.

The centre-back certainly seems at home at the club but if Spurs do not show signs of competing for major honours, he might be tempted to wait and see what offers are on the table next summer.

Alasdair Gold sheds light on the impression Odobert has made at Hotspur Way

Description

Alasdair Gold has revealed that Wilson Odobert has impressed Ange Postecoglou and his coaching staff in his first week and a half at Tottenham, with there being plenty of excitement at Hotspur Way about the youngster.

Wilson Odobert is making waves at Hotspur Way

The 19-year-old arrived at Spurs on the back of one season of Premier League football under his belt, with the youngster being one of the few bright sparks for Burnley in what was a campaign to forget for the Clarets last term.

The Frenchman’s signing was met with a mixed reception by the Spurs fan base, with some supporters understandably doubting if the newcomer is good enough to start regularly for a club with Champions League aspirations.

However, Odobert showcased in his debut against the Toffees just why Postecoglou and the decision makers at Tottenham decided to bring him through the door, running at the Everton defence at every opportunity and getting the fans off their seats.

Wilson Odobert could be a star at Spurs

Speaking about the newcomer’s impact at Spurs, Gold has now said on his YouTube channel: “Odobert has been a big success behind the scenes so far, in terms of impressing Postecoglou and the coaching staff.

MORE SPURS STORIES

“He’s just got this terrific ability, technique, pace, he dribbles without fear and goes, and goes, and goes.”

The youngster will be hoping to retain his place in the starting XI against Newcastle on Sunday, especially if Dominic Solanke is still out injured.

Spurs Web Opinion

Fans have to get this idea out of their heads that only big-money, big-name signings can prove successful.

In fact, most of the expensive additions that Tottenham have made over recent years have struggled while relatively bargain signings such as Pape Sarr, Udogie, Vicario, Bentancur and others have proven to be hits.

Odobert might potentially go on to become a much better player than someone like Desire Doue, who cost around twice as much as the former Burnley man.

Description

According to Football Insider, Tottenham Hotspur are keen on adding another midfielder to their squad in the final days of the transfer window.

Will Spurs make another summer signing?

Speaking after Tottenham’s 4-0 win over Everton on Saturday, Ange Postecoglou refused to rule out any late signings, insisting that the North London club will be on the look for any late opportunities to improve their squad (Sky Sports).

It has now emerged that the Tottenham boss is keen on adding reinforcements to the middle of the park.

The summer transfer window shuts on Friday 30 August, leaving Spurs with just a few days to get any remaining deals done.

Spurs are looking at a new midfielder

Despite the departure of Oliver Skipp and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg this summer, Spurs are well stocked in midfield, with Yves Bissouma, Rodrigo Bentancur and Pape Sarr battling it out with new signings Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall.

MORE SPURS STORIES

James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski were both also used as attacking midfielders in the match against Everton, thus expanding Postecoglou’s pool of choices even further.

According to Football Insider, Tottenham wish to swoop for one more central midfielder before the window slams shut, with the club thought to be working on the signing.

Spurs Web Opinion

There aren’t really any major rumours linking Tottenham with any midfielder at the moment.

Perhaps Spurs are going to pull one more surprise out of the hat in the final days of the transfer window, just as they did with the signing of Wilson Odobert.

Report: Daniel Levy's Tottenham demands are blocking Qatari investment

Submitted by daniel on
Picture

Description

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly attracting potential investment from Qatar and Saudi Arabia, but the latest update suggests that any interest has been deterred by Daniel Levy only wanting to give up a minority stake in the club.

Tottenham are attracting investor interest

Rumours of Qatari investment (QSI) being interested in acquiring a stake in Tottenham Hotspur emerged all the way back in January 2023, as The Telegraph stated that PSG owner, Nasser Al-Khelaifi, had met with Daniel Levy to indicate his interest in purchasing a stake in Spurs.

Former Newcastle investor, Amanda Staveley, withdrew her investment in the Magpies in July with The Athletic stating that one of the new investment opportunities Staveley was monitoring was Tottenham, which Duncan Castles revealed on The Transfers Podcast:

He said: “The idea is for Staveley and her husband to raise money in a fund in order to purchase what will probably be a Premier League club. I’m told that the primary target is Tottenham Hotspur. They see that as the most attractive of the assets for external investors in the Premier League ts present.”

Levy’s terms of the investment may be blocking talks

GiveMeSport’s Ben Jacobs has now revealed on Henry Wright TV’s YouTube channel that the fact Daniel Levy is only content to give up a minority stake may be preventing investment, explaining.

MORE SPURS STORIES

He said: “The reason I don’t think anything will develop between Qatar and Tottenham is because Levy is still only looking for minority investment.

“At this point he’s not willing to sell the entire club and that makes it a little bit harder for these big sovereign wealth funds and private investors in Qatar and Saudi to get a slice of the pie.

“Levy still wants to stay and my understanding is with Khelaifi and Levy the point of contention, and I don’t mean this in an acrimonious way, is that it was very clear to QSI that Levy wanted to control the club and I think QSI wanted a bit more strategic football power.

“As we know from Jim Ratcliffe at Man United, you can come into a club as a minority investor but with a pathway to full control or sporting control from day one.”

Spurs Web opinion

It has always been clear as a fan or merely a mutual that Daniel Levy is keen to grow Spurs under his watch and as Jacobs explained, it would be a big surprise should the long-term Tottenham chairman give up his role so easily.

Investment in the team has increased in recent years, going some way to compensate for under-investment under Pochettino when the club failed to sign a player for a whole year.

Football is increasingly becoming reliant on the club’s investment levels and their ability to build a team under PSR rules. Tottenham are well reported to have plenty of headroom in PSR and any footballing investment could transform Spurs as a club.
